Youth Serving Non-Profits in the US

We estimate the number of youth-serving non-profits in the US as 18,457, while approximately 364 non-profits are focused on serving K-12 schools. There are 4,133 non-profits focused on serving colleges and universities.

METHODOLOGY

When it comes to youth serving non-profits in the US, we utilized GuideStar's directory of non-profits. GuideStar says for themselves that they are "the world's largest source of information on nonprofit organizations". However, as the research criteria specified we focused on the US, we tailored our directory search to only include US non-profits.

To be sure this was the best source available, we also looked into other non-profit organization directories, such as National Organization for Youth Safety and The American Legion. However, both of these directories list only the organizations that are somehow affiliated with them. The rest of the directories we could find listed non-profits specific to their region, such as the Jefferson County Nonprofit Directory and Chicago Directory.

Therefore, we utilized GuideStar's directory to provide the number of youth-serving non-profits in the US.

YOUTH SERVING NON-PROFITS

GuideStar categorizes Charities and Nonprofit Organizations in major categories such as Human Services. The subcategory of Human Services is Youth Development, which lists 36,900 organizations. However, this number involves both charities and non-profit organizations.

We used the search function to look for only "youth development programs", which yielded 18,457 results, which can be seen in a screenshot here. After looking through the first two pages of the search results, this search term provides us with only non-profits, and not charities. Therefore, we can estimate that there are 18,457 youth-serving non-profits in the US.

We further searched for the term "K-12 nonprofit", which yielded 364 results, which can be seen in a screenshot here. Therefore, approximately 364 non-profits are focused on serving K-12 schools.

A search for "nonprofit university" yields 1,834 results, which can be seen in a screenshot here. A search for "nonprofit college" yields 2,299 results, which can be seen in a screenshot here. Therefore, approximately 4,133 non-profits are focused on serving colleges and universities.

If we compute all the results, we end up with:
364 + 1,834+ 2,299 = 4,497
This means 4,497 non-profits are specifically focused on serving either K-12 schools or colleges and universities. Therefore, we can assume that the rest of the organizations are focused on youth development in general, and serve all youth.

Important to note is that when searching for terms "nonprofit" and "non-profit" the results differ only by a few non-profits, and therefore both searches will yield almost exactly the same results.

CONCLUSION

We provide a number of youth-serving non-profits in the US, as well as the number of youth-serving non-profits for K-12 schools, and colleges and universities.
