How many white collar companies with more than 100 employees are there in the EU?
Hi! Thank you for your question about how many white collar companies with more than 100 employees are there in the EU.
In short, there is a maximum of 35,635 white-collar companies in EU with 100 or more employees. The actual may be a bit lesser due to the categorization of firms into the bracket of 50-249 employees. I have provided a deep dive of my findings below.
FINDINGS
Using a similar definition per white-collar companies as per the North America request, we went about finding a reliable source of information. White-collar’s main characteristics are higher education level, office setting and work requiring higher specific knowledge. The legal definition is a “worker who performs office jobs rather than a factory, farm, or construction work. S/he uses a minimum of physical exertion, as opposed to blue-collar laborers.”
Eurostat database provides the data classified according to its own definition of companies – medium (50 – 249 employees) and large (250+ employees) enterprises. The latest statistics available is for 2014. The total number of companies with 50 or more employees in EU28 countries is 35,635. The attached spreadsheet compiles the companies from individual countries in EU to arrive at the sum. There is no way to determine the exact percentage of companies between 50-100 employees. Further, another possibility is to add additional NACE activities from the Administration subsector, However, this would then include those companies which involve labor activities and hence, the criterion of white-collar companies will not hold.
CONCLUSION
To conclude, there is a maximum of 35,635 white-collar companies in EU with 100 or more employees. The actual may be a bit lesser due to the categorization of firms into the bracket of 50-249 employees.
