How many White-Collar Companies with more then 100 employee are there in North America?
Hi! Thanks for asking Wonder to find how many white collar companies there are with more than 100 employees in North America.
The short answer is the US and Canada have around 79,790 companies that are "white collar" and employ more than 100 people. Below you will find a deep dive of my findings and how I came to this conclusion.
METHODOLOGY
First off, as you can imagine, it was necessary to triangulate this figure, as no pre-compiled statistics were readily available. Therefore, the first step was to establish the designation of blue collar and pink collar versus white collar designations. Using various articles on how to define blue collar versus white collar, we can then use government statistical data from the US Census Bureau and Statistics Canada to find how many companies fall under each umbrella.
CALCULATING
Therefore, given the above, the following major NAICS code categories were used to define "white collar" companies:
51 - Information
52 - Finance and insurance
53 - Real estate and rental and leasing
54 - Professional, science and technical services
55 - Management of companies and enterprises
56 - Administrative and support and waste management and remediation services
61 - Educational services
6211 - Offices of physicians
6212 - Offices of dentists
6213 - Offices of other health practitioners
6214 - Outpatient care centers
6215 - Medical and diagnostic laboratories
622 - Hospitals
813 - Religious, grantmaking, civic, professional and similar organizations
91 - Public administration
All other types of companies were deemed blue collar, pink collar or even "gray collar", not falling into the exact white collar designation.
*United States
Using each of these codes, we can then use Census data to find the number of companies employing more than 100 people:
51 - Information = 3,339
52 - Finance and insurance = 5,574
53 - Real estate and rental and leasing = 3,618
54 - Professional, science and technical services = 10,610
55 - Management of companies and enterprises = 16,494
56 - Administrative and support and waste management and remediation services = 11,911
61 - Educational services = 4,911
6211 - Offices of physicians = 2,957
6212 - Offices of dentists = 289
6213 - Offices of other health practitioners = 1,282
6214 - Outpatient care centers = 2,477
6215 - Medical and diagnostic laboratories = 666
622 - Hospitals = 2,984
813 - Religious, grantmaking, civic, professional and similar organizations = 3,224
91 - Public administration = ?
US TOTAL: 70,336
For some strange reason, the US data does not give us figures for public administration. However, data from SICCodes gives us total number of companies for similar NAICS code 92 as 3,916. However, without further data, it is unknown how many of these establishments employ more than 100 people, therefore I opted to exclude this number from the US total so as not to skew the data.
*Canada
51 - Information = 581
52 - Finance and insurance = 932
53 - Real estate and rental and leasing = 443
54 - Professional, science and technical services = 1,280
55 - Management of companies and enterprises = 777
56 - Administrative and support and waste management and remediation services = 1,863
61 - Educational services = 926
6211 - Offices of physicians = 28
6212 - Offices of dentists = 5
6213 - Offices of other health practitioners = 29
6214 - Outpatient care centers = 225
6215 - Medical and diagnostic laboratories = 20
622 - Hospitals = 603
813 - Religious, grantmaking, civic, professional and similar organizations = 420
91 - Public administration = 1,322
CANADA TOTAL: 9,454
*Mexico
Many sources define Mexico as part of North America. Unfortunately, detailed statistical analyses are not gathered in the same level of detail as Canada and US and it was impossible to calculate how many establishments are "white collar" and employ more than 100 employees. Data from BLS shows us that 34.9% of the employment market is "services", under which white collar companies would fall. OECD data gives us a total "services" employment of 31,827,700. Despite thorough, deep dive research, no other statistical data for Mexico could be found. Unfortunately, it was therefore necessary to leave Mexico out of our total calculations for North America.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, there are 79,790 companies in the US and Canada employing more than 100 people that could be classified as white collar companies.
I hope this is helpful. Please feel free to ask Wonder if you have any more questions!
