What's the breakdown of commercial vehicles in the greater bay area region by number of businesses that own 1-10, 10-50, 50-150, 150-300, 300-500, and 500+ vehicles? How many such vehicles return back to a lot/space after the days work.

Hi there, and thank you for your request for the breakdown of commercial vehicles in the Greater Bay Area region by the number of businesses according to the fleet size. Below you will find information from the US Small Business Administration and the US Bureau of Transport Statistics.

In short, after extensive research through government databases, industry reports and corporate websites, I have determined that the information requested is not available, because all the public data on transportation and fleet sizes uses national or state figures.

However, I was able to give you a rough estimate of a breakdown of number of business per size of fleets for the state of California, as well as some general information about transportation in California.

I elaborate on my findings and methodology below.

METHODOLOGY
In order to answer your query, I first checked your previous research request, answered by my colleague Martin S., and took a look at his findings in order to build on them.

However, after researching databases from the US Small Business Administration, the US Bureau of Transport Statistics, the California Department of Motor Vehicles, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, and Fleet Owner, I hit a roadblock similar to Martin S.'s, and found myself at a loss of useful data to provide you, since none of these sources provided information to the level of detail you require - the sources either include information on the national level or state level, or, such as the SFMTA, focus on San Francisco without dabbling into the Greater Bay Area.

Therefore, I expanded my search to the state of California, and was able to gather some numbers in order to provide you with an estimation of the number of companies according to the size of their fleet, in a similar way Martin S. estimated national numbers.

USEFUL FINDINGS
According to the US Small Business Administration, there are 8,273 trucking companies in California, with 103,904 employees in total. If we assume that the company has one truck per employee, the breakdown would be as follows:

100-499: 138 companies

Please take into account that these number are estimates, and should be taken as such. These numbers do not take into account, either, other type of trade (like support to industries, or warehousing) that may also have a commercial vehicle fleet.

California is the top state in the country in terms of registered vehicles, concentrating 10.9% of total - 26.3 million. California is also the top state in state-operated vehicle fleet numbers - 38,300 units.

Please note that these numbers dates back to 2010, as no more recent figures are available.

POTENTIAL CONTINUED RESEARCH
In understanding the type of information that is available, I have come up with alternative research paths which may be useful for your project:

- What is the commercial transportation profile of California? What is the breakdown of commercial vehicles in the state of California?

To wrap up, after extensive research through government databases, industry reports and corporate websites, I have determined that the information requested is not available, because all the public data on transportation and fleet sizes uses national or state figures.

Should you be interested in us pursuing alternative research paths, please let us know.

Thank you for choosing Wonder!
