We have tried as much as we could to search for data in the San Francisco area as you have wished. However, despite our best efforts, we were not able to find any comprehensive data that pertains directly to small businesses in the said area in relevance to your question mainly because of the small amount of coverage smaller companies receive. Therefore, in order to be able to furnish you with some idea of how small businesses offer paid time off and holidays in terms of the number of days, we used data that pertains to the United States in general, while trying to remain in the context of small businesses only.
1. Average Vacation Time
According to a software company that deals with payroll programs, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that about 76% of small businesses employees received paid vacation days. BLS said that employees with 1-5 years of experience got an average vacation time of 10 days. However, employees with 5-10 years of experience got an average vacation time of 14 days. Moreover, employees with 10-20 years of experience got an average vacation time of 17 days. And employees with 20+ years of experience got an average vacation time of 19 days.
2. Paid Time Off
This article shows another interesting study about paid time off among small businesses. Zenefits conducted a study among their small business customers all over the United States in order to understand their paid off policies. They dug into their database and came out with this benchmark results that are more or less similar to the ones reported by BLS. That is, the average number of paid vacation granted to employees who have over 1-year experience is 10 days; for employees who have experience around 5 years get 15 days; and employees who have reached the mark of 10 years get 17 days; and employees who have experience of around 20 years get 20 days of paid vacation. In their case, however, paid vacation was separate from paid holidays and paid sick leave. Regarding sick leave, the average number of days granted are 9. While for paid holidays, the average granted for part-time workers are 8 days and for full-time workers are 9 days. From their study, Zenefits found out that their small business customers offered an average of 17.3 days of combined paid vacation and sick leave and 11 paid holidays annually. That amounts to a total of 28.3 days paid off per year. This is 1.3 days more compared to the national average of 27 days.
3. Vacation Time?
Another company that deals with the payroll business, SurePayroll, conducted a national survey among small business owners about the question of paid vacation time, which however did not include sick and personal leave. The results of their survey are as follows: the majority of the respondents, 45.7 %, said that they offered less than 10 days paid leave to their employees. Then 30% said they offered 10 days; while 16.9% said they offered 15 days; and 7.5% said that they offered more than 15 days. From the results of their survey, most companies offer less than 10 days paid vacation time.
CONCLUSION
Judging from the above given results of the 3 studies conducted, we can say that small business companies in the United States give paid time off days ranging from less than 10 to 28.3 days per annum. Some may or may not include paid holidays or sick leave within those paid time offs.
