VSaas Industry Market Share

Retail, banking/finance, healthcare, transportation, government/military, entertainment, and educational/religious facilities are the leading industries and users of VSaaS. Ultimately, we could not provide a market share, but have located the industries that are the most likely to be the leaders.

Industries That Use VSaaS With The Largest Market Share

  • Healthcare- Video surveillance is a major component of healthcare security, making this a leading industry.
  • Transportation- Keeping passengers secure and safe is a major issue, especially in large cities.
  • Government/Military- The rising crime rate, threats to infrastructure, and terrorism have increased the need for surveillance exponentially.
  • Entertainment- Large events like concerts and sporting events, coupled with terror threats and the need to keep everyone safe, has made this industry an early adopter of VSaaS.

Helpful Findings

  • The city surveillance market will grow at an average CAGR of 14.6% from 2016-2021.
  • Financial institutions spend on average of $2,300 per employee on cybersecurity alone.
  • Across all industries a pattern is emerging where budget increases are being seen yearly and are in "sustainable growth ranges".
  • JP Morgan Chase & Co is estimated to spend $750 million annually for security.
  • During 2017-2018, PwC surveyed a percentage of banks and found they had spent $737 million combined on surveillance. The majority of banks had projected anywhere from $6.5-$13 million would be allocated into their yearly budget for surveillance and upgrades alone.
  • It is estimated that $5 billion is budgeted each year for the NSA to collect data.

Research Strategy

Our initial research began by looking for pre-compiled lists of the industries that used VSaaS the most hoping we would find them by industry spend. There was nothing publicly available, but we did locate several lists from market research that broke the usage down by the largest segments. Seeing that a list by spend would not be available, we took multiple market lists from Inkwood Research, Profound, Allied Market Research, Security Sales, and Market Watch, then compiled what they stated as industry leaders. Next, we looked at the industries mentioned the most. From there, we developed the list that is presented in the findings.

Next, in an attempt to locate spending on VSaaS, we found the largest company from each segment and looked at their annual reports to see if there was a line item for surveillance or security to attempt to rank them. We consulted the annual reports of Wal-Mart, JP Morgan Chase, Universal Health Services, and Union Pacific. Our hopes were to find spending for surveillance, or at the very least security and then locate other business leaders within each segment to get an average. Unfortunately, annual reports list things such as security and surveillance under operating expenses, and not as an individual line item.

Finally, we did a media search, hoping to find articles that stated, on average, how much a business or an industry as a whole spent on VSaaS, surveillance, or security in general. Although we did not find spending, we did locate some helpful findings which we included.

Ultimately, without having industry spending on VSaaS, we can not order them by market share, but are confident that the above industries represent the lion's share of the market and are the biggest spenders.

VSaaS Leaders in Cargo Shipping Industry - Details 1

Below is a survey of the VSaaS solutions offered by Axis Communications, Cisco, and Tyco. As the technologies employed to provide these solutions are directly tied to the products themselves, we have sometimes integrated the two instead of creating separate sub-headings or bullet points. Due to the limitations imposed by the scope of a single Wonder request, our treatment is necessarily cursory; additional research on individual solutions may yield clearer results.

Axis Communications

Cisco

  • Cisco is a very large corporation with an incredible array of products and services. However, a few stand out as being particularly useful within the cargo shipping industry:
    • Cisco Connected Maritime (aka Cisco Connected Port) pulls together several Cisco product lines, including their Video Surveillance 6000 Series IP Cameras, to provide both security and "intelligent traffic management, for fast, efficient cargo tracking and routing."
    • Video Tripwire can likewise be used in security, i.e., to detect when someone has crossed a barrier without authorization, but can also be used to detect, for example, cargo ships entering a port or trucks entering a warehousing area. Once tripped, video analytics can identify the vehicle in question and match it to records of authorized vehicles, possibly matching the vehicle to its cargo manifest.
    • These and other Cisco monitoring systems can be integrated with "Cisco’s Video Surveillance Manager product line within the Virtual Multi-Tenant Data Center (VMDC) architectural framework," a VSaaS solution, allowing remote control of traffic flow and security.
  • Used singly or together, these services provide cargo shipping officials with (quoted verbatim):

Tyco

  • Tyco's products and services fall into four major categories:
    • Cloud Cameras, which do not need "on-site servers, storage, or bridges" to install and operate.
    • Cloud Gateways, which can be used to bridge an existing camera system "into the cloud effortlessly and cost-effectively."
    • Cloud Mobile Access, which enables communication with and control over the system from any mobile device.
    • Cloud Security Suite, which brings all the above together in a VSaaS solution. This system enables live video access "from 140 countries around the world with millisecond live video display on average," enables setting up cameras in discreet groups, and in Motion View mode shows only cameras that detect movement.
  • Tycho focuses on making video surveillance affordable and simple by using a modular, plug-and-play design that enables building on an existing system and providing tools that make it easier to manage large numbers of cameras from a single browser interface.
    • Among these tools is the ability to "run powerful motion analytics and heat map reports" to discern workflows and possible security holes.

Brivo

  • Distinctly from the previous entries, Bravo provides custom designs for building access control systems that pull together IT systems, SaaS platforms, and mobile & enterprise applications into "a unified, centralized management solution."
  • Brivo Onair integrates this system with video surveillance to enable remote visual monitoring of a facility from any device.
  • As an example of the system in action, one airport was linked through cloud services to the local public works and police departments, who were able to monitor the facility from six miles away without having to cut new trenches for cables (an impossibility due to the terrain in any case).
    • This ended a rash of thefts at the airport after a four-week installation that did not disrupt operations in any way.

Research Strategy

To address this request, we began by searching through market research and industry reports that highlight various players that are known or considered to be leaders in providing video surveillance services (VSaaS), solutions or equipment to the shipping ports industry. While we found several market research reports published by Allied Market Research and Market Gazette that provide the mentions some major players in the video surveillance and VSaaS markets, such as Axis Communication, Infinova, and Mobotix AG, there was no indication or mention that they were VSaaS or video surveillance leaders in serving the shipping ports industry. Available industry reports, such as the one published by the SDM Magazine, did not provide any relevant leading providers of video surveillance, hardware and/or software, to the shipping ports industry.

Next, we identified relevant trade organizations, such as the Security Industry Association. We thoroughly reviewed its resources, publications, and press section for information on the major companies that provide video surveillance services, solutions, and/or equipment to the shipping ports industry. Unfortunately, while there are different mentions of security in the seaports, this information was not available. To cap off our approach from the perspective of the video surveillance industry, we also conducted a press search for the leading companies in providing video surveillance, hardware and/or software, to the shipping ports industry. However, we could find articles, such as the one published by PR Newswire, that reference market reports on the video surveillance and VSaaS market, and included major players already that are already listed in previous market reports. We also found an article that profiles the top 20 video surveillance company; however, they were not based on those that provide their services or products to the shipping ports industry.

Next, we redirected our strategy by looking into the shipping ports industry with the objective of finding out the major companies that provide video surveillance (hardware and/or software) for them. For this, we searched through industry reports and news articles. While we found specific mentions of companies, such as Honeywell Security, SI Morcorp Solutions, SightLogix, Axis Communication, etc., from industry experts, there was no indication that they were the leaders. Others were mostly companies that provide these services to the shipping ports industry.

Since the above strategies did not yield the requested information, we decided to provide companies that have been considered to be leaders or are major companies and that they also provide video surveillance services (VSaaS), solutions, and/or equipment for the shipping ports industry. To achieve this, we compiled a list of these major companies found in the market and industry reports by Allied Market Research, Market Gazette, CIO Review, and PR Newswire that were mentioned, at least, twice. Next, we reviewed each company to identify if they provide video surveillance, either hardware or software, to the shipping ports industry. This brought our list to eight companies: Axis Communication, Bosch Security System, Dahua Technology, Honeywell Security Group, Infinova, Milestone Systems, Panasonic, and PELCO. This process can be found in the attached spreadsheet.

In summary, we have provided eight of these companies because they have been considered to be leaders or major players by multiple credible sources. Some were listed as a top companies by an expert review platform (PELCO and Milestone Systems), while some "have adopted strategies, such as product portfolio expansion, mergers & acquisitions, agreements, geographical expansion, and collaborations, to enhance their market penetration" — Bosch Security System, Honeywell Security Group, Dahua Technology, Axis Communication, Panasonic, and Infinova.

Research Strategy

We began by searching through market research reports and industry articles for the leading players in providing video surveillance services (VSaaS), solutions, and/or equipment to the offshore drilling industry. However, we quickly found that this information was not available and that available market reports only profiled the offshore drilling market, oil and gas-related reports, and their key players. Moreover, there was no mention that these players were leaders in providing video surveillance to the target industry. An example of this report was published by Markets and Markets. Other pieces of information found were individual mentions of some companies that provide the requested services to the offshore drilling industry and oil and gas-related industries.

We also searched for and identified some global industry trade associations, such as the Security Industry Association. We reviewed its press releases, publications and resources with the hope of finding any relevant information about the major players that provide video surveillance services, hardware and/or software, to the offshore drilling industry but found no relevant information. Available information through these media loosely bordered on the importance of safety and security in the oil and gas sector.

Next, we changed our approach by looking into the offshore drilling industry, to identify the major companies that provide them with video surveillance services, solutions, and/or equipment. This strategy proved to be a bit relevant, as we found reports that profile the global exploration and drilling security market, including its major players. Some of these reports were provided by Grand View Research and Transparency Market Research, as others appear to provide similar content as these. We also found that the oil and gas security market is related to the offshore drilling industry and the report published by Allied Market Research includes a list of the major players. However, a quick review of the offerings of some of these companies reveals that while they provide various solutions for the security of oil and gas processes, these solutions do not specifically include video surveillance.

Therefore, we resorted to finding the major companies in the video surveillance and VSaaS market and then, highlighting those that provide their services to the offshore drilling industry. We could compile this list by selecting the companies that are mentioned across multiple sources. These sources include reports, articles, and top lists from Allied Market Research, Market Gazette, CIO Review, and PR Newswire. From these reports, we compiled a list of the major players provided and then, reviewed each company to find out if they provide video surveillance services (VSaaS), solutions, and/or equipment to the offshore drilling industry. In doing this, we could only find five companies — Axis Communication, Bosch Security System, Dahua Technology, Infinova, and PELCO. Therefore, to complete the list, we reviewed other providers of video surveillance to the offshore drilling industry that were not consistently mentioned. With this, we completed the list with the addition of ABB Ltd. The sorting process can be found in the attached spreadsheet.

In summary, we have provided six of these companies because they have been considered to be leaders or major players across multiple credible sources. PELCO is listed as a top company that has excelled in its services and product portfolio. Axis Communication, Bosch Security System, Dahua Technology, Infinova, and PELCO "have adopted strategies, such as product portfolio expansion, mergers & acquisitions, agreements, geographical expansion, and collaborations, to enhance their market penetration." Lastly, ABB Ltd has "expanded its market presence by adopting various business strategies such as acquisition, geographical expansion, product development, strategic alliance, and collaboration."

Research Strategy

Building on previous research, the team focused on the websites of each company--ABB Ltd, Axis Communication, and Bosch Security Systems--to identify the VSaaS products and services provided, what these products and services help companies do (solutions), and the unique technologies these companies utilize.

We were able to locate all of this information on the websites for Axis Communication and Bosch Security System. However, likely due to how ABB Ltd. presents information for clients, e.g., letting one search by industry or by services, it is difficult to determine the precise equipment and technology that is utilized in the services they provide. To address this, we then tried to search by industry--oil and gas--but we could not easily determine the specific technologies and specifications of the products offered for VSaaS solutions. Instead, the website offers a rather exhaustive list of every conceivable product without explaining whether the products were part of VSaaS. We tried then to search by systems and then, thirdly, we tried to search by services. But in both of these cases, we encountered, again, a list of systems of services with no way to determine how they related to VSaaS.

From Part 02
Quotes
  • "Video surveillance as a service (VSaaS) refers to hosted cloud-based video surveillance. The service typically includes video recording, storage, remote viewing, management alerts, and cybersecurity. The video processing and management are performed offsite using the cloud, though the VSaaS system may have a simple onsite device to communicate with the cameras and the cloud, acting as a communications conduit. The global VSaaS market is estimated to grow with 20.77% CAGR during the year 2019 – 2027. The base year considered for the study is 2018 and the estimated period is between 2019 and 2027."
  • "The growth of this market is driven by the following factors: • Declining prices of cameras • Trend shift from analog to IP cameras • The increase in demand for real time access. • Remote/online operation facility • The complexity of cabling is reduced by I.P. cameras and VSaaS. • The most important driver is the declining prices of I.P. cameras"
  • "The prices of security solutions, such as IP cameras, are quickly dropping and with a new array of technologies, there is no need of an internal server to store the camera data as it will be stored in the cloud. This will make it easier and cost-effective to install security solutions. Earlier, companies had to hire security guards to constantly monitor their premises. Several companies are cutting down on the number of security guards and switching to security services, in which a third party is alerted whenever there is suspicious activity. This, in turn, cuts down on costs and false alarms. As vendors of security solutions come up with better surveillance technology and attract more customers, there will be a further decline in the price of the security solutions. Thus, security products will also become an option for the common house owners along with big companies. The decline in the price of video surveillance is expected to drive the VSaaS market."
  • "• The restraints and challenges of the VSaaS market are slow internet speed, lack of common standards that cause integration issues, growth in fear for privacy, low awareness about the market, and privacy and security concerns for the data collected. The important restraint in growth is the fear of privacy. A surveillance system monitors every activity of the location where it is installed. Moreover, continuous deployment of advanced and sophisticated information gathering coupled with access control technologies are done in a surveillance system.
