The Visually Impaired - Demographic Analysis
New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Antonio, Philadelphia, Houston, Phoenix, Dallas, Detroit, and El Paso are cities in the US with the largest number of visually impaired people. Details specific to these cities have been populated in the attached spreadsheet.
We searched government databases like the US Census, disability-related portals like the The National Federation for the Blind and disabilitystatistics.org, third-party statistical databases like Data USA, and media reports. The National Federation for the Blind provides statistical data specific to the state, but not the city. Although the US Census provides the number of visually impaired individuals for all the cities in the US, it does not provide this information precompiled; a search query needs to be run for each city. Given this limitation, we triangulated the top 10 cities with the largest number of visually impaired people.
For the purpose of triangulation, we made an assumption that the cities with the highest number of visually impaired people will be among the 50 most populous cities in the US (overall).
We then used the American Fact Finder to find the number of visually impaired individuals in each of the 50 most populous cities (total population) in the US. Among the 50 cities, we identified the 10 with the highest number of visually impaired people. The attached spreadsheet contains information pertaining to the 50 cities. As search query result URLs on American Fact Finder are not shareable, we have provided screenshots of the retrieved data.
The top 10 cities with the largest number of visually impaired people are among the top 21 US cities by population. Given that there is a reasonably strong correlation between the number of visually impaired people in a city and the population of the city, it is very unlikely that a city that is not among the 50 largest ones (by population) will be part of the top 10 cities in terms of the number of visually impaired individuals.
