What is the USA market-size (TAM) for the Sleeping consultant for baby industry?
Hi! Thanks for asking Wonder to find the US market size for sleep consultants for babies industry.
The short answer is there are around 285 registered baby sleep consultants. The industry is worth an estimated $32.3-40.9 million. Below you will find a deep dive into my findings.
NUMBER OF CONSULTANTS
While not an exhaustive listing, many baby sleep consultants are registered with the IACSC, the International Association of Child Sleep Consultants. There are 66 consultants registered in the United States. The Family Sleep Institute also lists 92 Certified Sleep Consultants. Sleep Sense has 51 registered consultants in the US. There are 58 certified Gentle Sleep Coaches. Good Night Sleep Site lists 6 US-based consultants. There are also an unknown quantity of consultants working for umbrella websites/companies like The Baby Sleep Site (though a 2015 article states they employ 12 consultants).
That totals 285 baby sleep consultants in the United States, with a further unknown quantity that are employed directly by websites or not trained by one of the major programs.
After exhaustive searching, I concluded these are the main certifications available in the United States for child sleep training. We also have to assume that parents would not hire an uncertified/untrained sleep consultant for their infant.
INDUSTRY VALUE
What was trickier to find was the value of this industry. Parenting magazine found that parents who go through sleep training spend on average $2,500, but with services ranging from $250-1,000 for various types and quantities of consultations, it's difficult to use this for a bottom-up calculation.
Additionally, data from Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association estimates the value of the baby sleep products industry to be worth $325 million. This does not include sleep consultants, but rather items like swaddling blankets, white noise machines, sleep sacks, and so on.
Despite thorough, deep dive research, I was unable to find any pre-compiled market data on baby sleep consultants. It seems no one has yet to generate market research giving a value to this industry, either worldwide or US. There was also no data on how many parents hire sleep consultants, what percentage of parents who seek sleep products hire services, or any other statistical data that might allow for us to triangulate such a figure.
I also attempted to find an average salary or earnings for a US-based sleep consultant. The closest thing I could find was Glassdoor stated the average Baby Sleep Site Consultant earns $43,098. These are consultants directly employed by the well-known website to provide e-mail, virtual and telephone advice on baby sleep. Entrepreneurs running their own sleep consultations may earn far more, depending on client base and how many hours they choose to work. However, it is the only baseline I was able to find after many hours of thorough searching.
If we multiply $43,098 average salary by 285 known sleep consultants, that equals $12,282,930. This is only salaries, not total earnings. If we follow a baseline of 30-38% of gross sales are payroll (i.e., salary), then baby sleep consultants could be worth around $32.3-40.9 million in the US.
CONCLUSION
To wrap it up, there are around 285 registered sleep consultants for infants in the United States. An estimated industry market size is between $32.3-40.9 million. This figure could be higher to account for other baby sleep consultants not certified by one of the main entities, entrepreneurs earning significantly more than the average and unregistered consultants.
I hope this is helpful. Please feel free to ask Wonder if you have any more questions!
