  • Since the estimated global market size for the whiteboard market is about $295.22 million and the traditional whiteboard market is about $200 million, the calculated percentage share of this market is approximately 67.75% of the total whiteboard market. Also, for North America, the total whiteboard market size is calculated to be $30.85 million.

Research Strategy

Initially, we searched for precompiled information on the US market size for whiteboards through various market research reports including Grand View Research, Market Watch, IMARC Grour, Reuters, Energias Market Research, and various others. The research indicated that there were no publicly available data for the US market in relation to the whiteboards market.

The above research lead us to various global reports related to the global whiteboard market, global interactive whiteboards market, and others. So, we decided to change our strategy and look for the global market size of the whiteboard market and the US market share in the global market. But unfortunately, none of the reports mentioned above could reveal such information. The search could only provide various data points related to the global whiteboard industry, including interactive display market and traditional whiteboard market. This search led us to the global market size for the interactive whiteboard market.

Our next strategy was to use the above data and the already found data for the global whiteboards market size to determine the percentage share of the interactive whiteboards market and then to use this percentage to calculate the US market size for the whiteboards market. For this, we needed the find the US market size for interactive whiteboards market. While searching through various market research reports, we did not find the desired information. However, we were able to learn through a report from Reports Web, 2019 that "in the Traditional Whiteboard industry China occupied 48.21% of the production market in 2016, followed by Europe (15.19%) and North America (10.45%)" and that "geographically, China was the largest consumption market in the world, which took about 45.06% of the global consumption volume in 2016. Europe shared 16.94% of global total."

Assuming this percentage to be true for the North America whiteboard market, we calculated the market size for the traditional whiteboards market and then calculated the percentage share of the global traditional whiteboard market in the total global whiteboards market. We then used this percentage to determine the market size for the whiteboards market for North America. In absence of any publicly available data for the US, we decided to provide the North America market size for whiteboards as helpful insights.
We also tried searching for any paid report available for the US market size for whiteboards and were able to find a paywalled protected report from World Wide Market. It contains the market size for the United States Interactive Whiteboard market, which, if accessed, can be used to derive the desired market size for the estimated US market size for whiteboards.

Our calculations were the following:

The estimated market size for global white board market would be about $295.22 million (Omni CAGR calculator)

The market size for North America market for traditional whiteboards = 10.45% of $200 million = $20.9 million

With our estimated global market size for whiteboard market of $295.22 million and the traditional whiteboard market of about $200 million, we can calculate the percentage share to be = ($200 million/$295.22 million) x 100 = 67.75%

This indicates that traditional whiteboard market is about 67.75% of the total whiteboard market and therefore, for North America also, the total whiteboard market size can be calculated to be = ($20.9 million x 100/67.75) = $30.85 million

The global interactive whiteboard market is segmented by experts into Education, Corporate, Commercial, and Others.

Whiteboard Market By Segments

  • The global market size for interactive whiteboard market was $3.8 billion in 2018.
  • By application, the global interactive whiteboard market is segmented into Education, Corporate, Commercial, and Others.
  • Education accounts for the largest share of the market at roughly 65%. This amounts to $2.47 billion. (65/100*3.8 billion).

  • Commercial's share of the whiteboard market is up to 10% which amounts to $380 million (10/100*$3.8 billion).
  • The "Others" category has a market share of about 5%. This means its market size was $190 million (5/100*$3.8 billion).

Additional Information

  • The high demand for interactive whiteboards in the education sector is expected to drive the growth of the market over the next few years.
  • Factors such as the "requirement for educator proficiency in technology and research documenting increased learning" and the desire to "develop 21st century skills for students" have fueled the adoption of interactive whiteboards.
  • The healthcare sector uses interactive whiteboards to share visuals like X-rays with medical professionals in remote/other locations.
  • The corporate sector uses interactive whiteboards "in offices for collaboration and in kiosks and building lobbies in order to provide information and allow customers to place orders or sign up for services."

Research Strategy

In order to provide a breakdown of the US whiteboard market size by office, industrial, healthcare, education, and personal, we first turned to business publications like Business Insider and Forbes. We found articles by these websites that discussed the current state of the US market for school supplies, however, whiteboard specifically, was not mentioned.

Next, we turned to market research reports by Grand View Research and Energias Market Research among others. These research reports only offered data on the global interactive whiteboard market, no data specific to the industrial, healthcare, education, and personal segments in the US was found in them. They simply mentioned North America's share of the market. Substantial information on the US specifically was blocked by a paywall.

Another approach we took was combing through data intelligence resources including Statista. We tried finding any chart on the market size of the US whiteboard industry categorized by office, industrial, healthcare, education, and personal. Again, this was unfruitful. Statista only offered data on the global school supplies market and this data was not segmented by country.

We attempted reviewing professional social media sites like LinkedIn. Sometimes, professionals on LinkedIn share pay-walled market reports on this platform. This was a dead end as we only found the above mentioned market research reports on the global interactive whiteboard market. Due to the lack of data on the US whiteboard market size by the office, industrial, healthcare, education, and personal segments, we provided the information we found on the global interactive whiteboard market and its segments.

US Whiteboard Market Material Breakdown

After an exhaustive search, information on a breakdown of the U.S. whiteboard market by surface material is largely unavailable on public domains. However, in the course of this research, the research team found that the porcelain segment has the biggest share of the whiteboard material market.

Related Findings

  • Based on surface material, the whiteboard market is segmented into porcelain, glass, melamine, ceramic steel, and others.
  • Globe News Wire reports that the porcelain segment had the largest share of the whiteboard material market in 2016.
  • The report also opines that the porcelain segment would continue to have the largest share of the whiteboard material market up till 2023.
  • Market Watch reports that the glass board market would witness an exponential growth rate from 2018 to 2025.
  • Glass boards are made from "various types of pressboards coated in a static-cling and dry erase chemicals", it is gradually replacing traditional whiteboards.
  • The glass board market is further subdivided into magnetic dry erase boards and non-magnetic dry erase boards segment.

Research Strategy

To provide a breakdown of the U.S. whiteboard market by surface material, your research team commenced with a thorough search through market reports and expert publications. We hoped to find a pre-compiled report on the market size of revenue breakdown from the whiteboard market segmented by surface material in the U.S. However, relevant information on this was gated behind a paywall.

Our next approach was to search through blogs and articles that dwell on the whiteboard market. We also increased the scope of this search to the global scale. We hoped to find any publication that could provide a hint into a breakdown of the whiteboard market segments by market share which would be used, together with the global market size, to estimate the sizes of the various segments in the whiteboard material market. Again, no relevant data on market share for both the U.S. and the global scale was available to the public domain. We only found reports which hinted that the porcelain segment has had the largest share of the market since 2016.

Furthermore, we tried to find separate reports on each segment of the whiteboard market. We hoped to identify some key players in each of these reports which we could use the revenue and market share of such companies to estimate the size of the various segmented market. In the course of the research, we could only find a separate report on the glass board market but there was no information on key players in this segment.

As determined by the previous request, the size of the U.S. whiteboard market is publicly unavailable. Likewise, information on the segmentation of this market, by surface material, is largely unavailable in the public domain.

US Whiteboard Market Trends

Three trends identified in the North American traditional whiteboard market include sluggish market growth, the adoption of technologically advanced substitutes, and innovations in whiteboard design.

Sluggish Market Growth

  • The North American market for traditional whiteboards is expected to see sluggish market growth due to the increasing adoption of more technologically advanced substitutes, like interactive whiteboards.
  • PowerPoint presentations projected onto a screen are also taking the place of traditional whiteboards.
  • Glass boards are also replacing whiteboards, with glass being easier to erase and more attractive.

Adoption of Technologically Advanced Substitutes

  • In the North American market, traditional white boards are being replaced by more technologically advanced substitutes, like interactive whiteboards. This is especially true in the education segment of the market.
  • Other technologically advanced options, like tablets, smartphones, and interactive panels, are also replacing the traditional white board, as well as competing with the interactive whiteboard market.

Innovative Whiteboard Designs

  • US whiteboard and glass board manufacturer GMi Companies, a long-standing player in the whiteboard market, moved to focusing on aesthetically pleasing glass boards and design-friendly mobile white boards/glass boards for their new product launches. The mobile boards fit into the overall trend for more flexible office space, while the glass boards highlight the trend towards more accessible design.
  • Quartet also highlights their aesthetically pleasing glass boards.
  • EVERWhite Boards, a US based manufacturer of whiteboards, recently created MOBILEGuard Ballistic whiteboards, satisfying the increased need for school safety in the US.
  • Custom whiteboards, or those pre-printed with custom logos or grids, are also increasingly in-demand for hospitals and businesses.

Research Strategy

Limited information about the traditional whiteboard market in general, and especially the US traditional whiteboard market, was available in the public domain. As such, your research team was only able to identify trends in the North American, as opposed to US specific, traditional whiteboard market.

In order to identify these trends, we first looked directly in market research reports on the subject of traditional whiteboards. Market research, conducted by experts, tends to report directly on trends evident within the market. While we found many such reports, they were all focused on the global traditional whiteboard market and only highlighted one trend — that traditional whiteboards are being replaced by more technologically advanced substitutes.

We then turned to market research on affiliated markets such as the interactive whiteboard market, the glass board market, and the dry erase marker market. Our belief here was that these markets have a direct correlation to the traditional white board market (interactive whiteboards and glass boards are a substitute for whiteboards, while dry erase markers are used to write on whiteboards), and therefore research about these markets could contain clues to what is happening within the traditional whiteboard market. From this research, we found that interactive whiteboards are definitely replacing traditional white boards in the North American market. However, we were still limited in this approach by the fact that all market reports found had a global focus with insights only about North America, and not the US specifically, available.

Finally, we studied the leading producers of traditional whiteboards for the US market, including GMi Companies, EVERWhite Boards, US Markerboard, and Quartet. Our thought process here was that by studying recent product launches from these companies we could identify current market trends, as the manufacturers would know what is in-demand in the market. This strategy provided the final trend new product designs in the whiteboard market.

US Whiteboard Pain Points

Common customer pain points for whiteboards purchased in the US are damaged product, poor construction quality, poor writing surface quality and incorrect sizing on the label/listing. These complaints were collated from real customers purchasing a variety of whiteboards at Amazon, Office Depot and Staples.

Damaged Product

  • Every single whiteboard reviewed in this brief had at least one, and usually multiple, consumer complaints about damage once they opened the packaging. It seems that whiteboards often contain warping, dings, cracks, bubbles or other damage that is not visible when purchasing or happens during the shipping process.
  • For example, this whiteboard arrived warped with multiple dents. The customer was angry because it was not returnable.
  • This FORAY board contained bubbling when the customer opened it.
  • This whiteboard from Staples arrived with the frame very loose around the product.

Poor Construction Quality

  • Aside from actual damage, customers were also annoyed when their whiteboard was lower quality than expected. Many used words like 'cheap', 'flimsy' or that the overall whiteboard did not last as long as they expected.
  • This whiteboard from Amazon reportedly "rattles against the wall" when writing on it.
  • Sometimes, it is the mounting equipment included that customers complain about. This customer complains the "cheap plastic clips that are used to hang the board to the wall do not work! It's constantly falling down."
  • One customer was disappointed with their new FORAY whiteboard, because they had previously owned another brand and perceived this new one to be "flimsy".
  • Another customer had a similar sentiment about this whiteboard: "Although the price is relatively low, even when based on price, these are still not worth the money. Who wants a white board that looks like it will last for a year or two tops? I have a gently used white board from another manufacturer that erases as well after 18 years of heavy use."

Poor Writing Surface Quality

  • Similar to overall construction, many consumers complained their new whiteboard's writing surface in particular was poor quality.
  • Common problems were either that dry erase markers were not writing properly ("ghosting") or that ink was not fully erasing.
  • For this whiteboard, a customer's brand new marker smeared badly when erasing, and even using specialist whiteboard cleaner did not work.
  • For the same board, another customer struggled when all their markers faded badly when writing — the ink would not 'stick' to the board.
  • This Staples whiteboard had significant issues with darker colors staining the board. The customer was unable to remove the stains normally, nor by using specialist products.
  • Even this $240 whiteboard from Quartet is not immune to complaints about staining. Many customers pointed out the point of a whiteboard is easy erasing, so to be told by customer service to use a special cleaner made them annoyed.

Incorrect Sizing Listed

  • The last pain point is more specific to online purchasing, though if a customer relied on labeling in-store, it could also be an issue. Customers struggled when whiteboard arrived at a different size than the label/listing.
  • This whiteboard off Amazon arrived a half inch smaller in both width and height.
  • This board from Quartet was listed as measuring 24 x 36 inches. The customer was angry to measure the board at 23 x 35 inches.
  • Another Quartet board had the same issue. It is listed at 4 x 3 ft (48 x 36 inches). When it arrived, the customer was angry it didn't match their old board, as it was 2 inches narrower.

Research Strategy

Our first approach was to look for market research, consumer surveys or other data that conveyed customer pain points regarding whiteboards. This ultimately proved unsuccessful, as there was no data on this singular product. We did widen our search to pain points surrounding office supplies, but any information found was far too vague to apply to whiteboard shopping.

As a second strategy, we then looked at popular whiteboards on major retailer or office supply retailers' websites (Office Depot, Staples and Amazon). We examined customer reviews of the most popular whiteboards sold on these websites to check where consumers were reporting negatives. We ensured we selected a variety of brands, sizes and styles to ensure customer complaints were coming from the breadth of the whiteboard market, rather than being relevant to only a certain brand or price point. This yielded some very enlightening themes of complaints around damaged products, poor construction quality, poor writing surface quality and incorrect sizing on the label/listing. We categorized all negative reviews for each whiteboard product, and above we have described the top four most common complaints found within.

Here are the links to the product reviews that we collated to address the request details.
