Tractor Supply Competitive, Part 7: Sephora

In rows 4-18, columns L-N, of the attached spreadsheet we have provided information on how Sephora's loyalty program and rewards credit cards work. The information includes a 1-2 sentence description of how cardholders earn points/rewards, a list of the base level benefits of the card, card tier benefits, as well as other beneficial data. Below is an overview of our findings.

All the requested information for the Sephora Beauty Insider program was readily available online on Sephora's website. However, Sephora recently announced on March 14, 2019 that they will be launching the Sephora Credit Card, Sephora Visa Credit Card, and Sephora Visa Signature Credit Card starting sometime this spring.

Because the news of Sephora's credit card launch is so recent, even after reviewing Sephora's credit card press release, viewing Sephora's website, and reading through articles from reputable payments and commerce news websites, we were unable to determine information regarding earning, redemption, or specific program benefits, as that information has not been released to the public yet.

Information regarding credit card tiers, co-brand benefits, partners, and the program's convenience standpoint was detailed in the company's press release and will be provided in the overview below.

Sephora Beauty Insider

With the Sephora Beauty Insider program, members can earn 1, 1.25, or 1.5 points (based on their tier) for every $1 spent at Sephora either in-store or online that can be redeemed for products in the Rewards Bazaar. All unredeemed points expire when a member's membership account has not engaged in point activity for 18+ months

Base program benefits include 1 point per $1 spent, birthday gifts (2 choices), seasonal savings ($), Rewards Bazaar (trial-size products and sets), in-store beauty services, free beauty classes, and access to the Beauty Insider Community. The loyalty program is integrated into Sephora's mobile app so that members can easily access their benefits and point totals.

The tiers of the Beauty Insider program include Insider, VIB, and Rouge. VIB and Rouge members receive additional benefits such as an increase in points per $1 spent, additional birthday gifts, and more product options from the Rewards Bazaar. We have provided a more detailed description of the additional benefits for each tier in the spreadsheet.

Sephora PLCC

Sephora has partnered with Alliance Data to provide Sephora customers with the first ever Sephora Credit Card. Sephora's PLCC will provide its specific credit card benefits in addition to the Sephora Beauty Insider benefits. In fact, clients who are not already Beauty Insider members will automatically be enrolled in the program when they apply for the credit card.

Sephora Visa

Sephora partnered with Alliance Data to bring customers the Sephora Visa Credit Card and the Sephora Visa Signature Credit Card. Both the Sephora Visa Credit Card and the Sephora Visa Signature Credit Card will provide their credit card benefits in addition to the Sephora Beauty Insider benefits. The Sephora Visa Signature credit cards will have access to Visa Signature benefits that are detailed further in the spreadsheet.

Tractor Supply Competitive, Part 6: Amazon

Details of four Amazons loyalty and credit card programs—Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card, Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card, Amazon Store Card, and Amazon Prime Store Card—were entered in the corresponding cells in the attached spreadsheet (columns H to J, rows 4 to 18, under Best in Class tab).

The Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card and the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card work in a similar way (both are issued in partnership with Chase Bank) except the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card offers 3% cash back on Amazon and Wholefoods purchases while the Prime card offers a higher rewards rate at 5%. Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card cardholders also receive a $50 Amazon gift card upon approval while Prime cardholders receive $70.

The Amazon Store Card and the Amazon Prime Store Card (both issued by Synchrony Bank) also work in a similar way except the Amazon Store Card does not offer reward points. Amazon Prime Store Card (for Prime members) offers rewards by getting cash back at 5% for every Amazon purchase. All other required details were provided in the attached spreadsheet including all source links.

Tractor Supply Competitive, Part 4a: Home Depot PLCC

Our research reviewed the Home Depot Consumer Credit Card in column R of the attached spreadsheet. The Home Depot Consumer Credit Card is not a reward based card and therefore much of the information was not applicable. The Home Depot Consumer Credit Card provides six months of deferred interest on purchases of $299 or more.

THE HOME DEPOT CONSUMER CREDIT CARD

We began our research by reviewing Home Depot's website for information on its Consumer Credit Card. The card has a number of benefits, including APR of 17.99%, no annual fee, one time discount from $25 up to $100 on first purchase, one-year product returns, deferred interest on purchases for six-months or more, and additional discounts on select product categories.

Home Depot's website makes no mention of any reward benefits for Consumer Credit Card holders, but to confirm this we searched for credit card reviews, to see if there were any additional benefits not listed on Home Depot's website. We next looked for consumer reviews to see if any mentioned any more rewards or benefits. Based on this information the Home Depot Consumer Credit Card is not a reward based card. We searched through credit card review websites like NerdWallet, Investopedia, and ValuePenguin.
Home Depot does have a mobile app but as the Project Consumer Credit Card does not give cardholders the ability to earn or redeem points the use of the app for this benefit is not relevant.

Tractor Supply Competitive, Part 3: Petco, Petsmart, Lumber Liquidators

This spreadsheet contains the details of the loyalty programs of Petsmart, Petco, and Lumber Liquidators.

Methodology

Our research was able to obtain all the required information for Petco, Petsmart, and Lumber Liquidators. We also found that Petsmart and Petco do not offer store-branded rewards credit cards from their official website and blogs. Most of our research was straightforward and our sources were the assigned items' websites. For the portions that were not available on the websites, we searched through blogs, websites, where we found the remaining information.

PETSMART’S loyalty PROGRAMS

For every dollar spent either in stores or online, one will earn 8 points. These points can either be earned when making purchases, paying for specific pet-related services or even donating to PetSmart Charities.

They offer several benefits, such as the value prop of redemption. For every 1,000 points, one gets $2.50. They also offer free shipping for all purchases that are $49 and above.

PETCO’S LOYALTY PROGRAMS

Petco offers its customers an opportunity to get 5% back every day. This is possible by earning one point for every dollar spent and for every 100 points, one has the chance to earn an additional $5 reward.

For every second order, they offer a 20% discount and free shipping. They ensure that when an item has been ordered, the customer has the ability to track the item. They ensure that each pet's birthday is celebrated with a gift. They have a mobile app as well, which has a loyalty program integrated.

Lumber LIQUIDATORS

Lumber Liquidators offers an interest-free financing system that provides short-term loans with terms between 6 months and a year. It also allows the customers to have access to online account management.

They do not offer a system where one can earn points and be rewarded for them with certain financial offers. They offer access to specific discounts at Lumber Liquidators. They require a minimum monthly payment and offer online account management capabilities.

Tractor Supply Competitive, Part 2: Walmart

After an exhaustive search through industry review reports and media releases, we could not find any co-brand card benefits of Walmart, we have provided the information pertaining to how Walmart's credit card-based rewards programs work. This can be accessed from the attached spreadsheet.

METHODOLOGY

To address this request, we primarily searched through the card product page of the company's website. We generally found most of the information except for the co-brand card benefits of Walmart. For this, we further searched industry review websites such as Credit Kharma to find out if there are any analyses that cover this aspect but found no pertinent information.

Next, we searched through the press release section of Walmart to see if it has publicly announced the benefits that its cardholders would enjoy with respect to its card co-brands. However, this information could not be found. We also identified its partners as Sam's Clubs and Murphy USA. We tried to search the websites and press sections of these companies but there were no mentions on any card co-brand benefits with Walmart.

Lastly, we searched other third-party media sites like the WSJ and the Washington Post for any insights that we could gather around the co-brand card benefits of Walmart's credit cardholders and MasterCard holders. Again, there was no relevant information. With this information being unavailable publicly, we assumed that there are no co-brand benefits yet.

KEY FINDINGS

Walmart's credit card and MasterCard are essentially the same. Their various account holders enjoy the same benefits with respect to Walmart's card reward program, the 3.2.1 Save Rewards. The only little different is that while its credit card can only be used across all Walmart stores and platforms including Sam's Clubs and Murphy USA, its MasterCard can be used in all Walmart stores and platforms, Sam's Clubs, Murphy USA, and other places MasterCards are accepted.

Tractor Supply Competitive, Part 1: REI

REI is a co-op and owned by its members. Membership comes with a number of benefits, which includes the REI MasterCard (exclusive to members only). For each eligible purchase made at an REI store or outlet, a member receives 10% of the purchase back in the form of annual dividends that is paid once a year in the month of March. Dividends can be redeemed by purchasing REI gear or are paid out in cash or by check. REI MasterCard ownership provides an additional 5% back on purchased REI items (here an eligible purchase is more broadly defined) and 1% back on non-REI purchases.

On the attached spreadsheet all requested information can be found in columns D and E and in rows 4-18. Below is a clarification on the answers provided on the spreadsheet.

FINDINGS

  • REI does not have a point-reward system. As mentioned above, dividends are earned based on eligible purchases made. Therefore, information in these rows were marked with N/A.
  • The REI MasterCard website made no mention of a tier system and provided no tiers with thresholds and additional benefits. Therefore, most questions related to this topic were answered with "no" or N/A.
  • As REI has no point-reward system, it was not possible to report on a redemption rate. As mentioned above annual dividends consisting of membership dividend (10% back for REI eligible purchases) and MasterCard dividends (5% back for REI purchases and 1% back for non-REI purchases) are fixed and paid once a year.
  • Although 1% dividends can be earned from non-REI purchases, no specific partners are mentioned where these points can be earned or where points can be redeemed. It is worth noting; however, that the card was issued through the US Bank.
  • Free shipping is available for all purchases above $50 regardless of membership. For MasterCard cardholders there is an additional shipping benefit through Shop Runner for more than 140 online stores (REI not included).

On the attached spreadsheet in columns D and E, rows 4-18 all requested information can be found.

Lowe's Visa credit card provides financing and rewards on home improvement products at its retail locations across the United States. It gives the option to choose discounts on everyday purchases and special financing terms for purchases above a certain amount. The card does not provide redemption offers. Tractor Supply Competitive, Part 5c: Lowe's Business Rewards Card from AMEX.

In rows 4-18, column X, of the attached spreadsheet, we have provided earning, redemption, and benefit information for Lowe's Business Rewards Card from American Express. Below is a brief overview of our findings.

Calculations

In order to calculate the rate of redemption, we took the dollar amount redeemed divided by the number of points needed to redeem to give us the rate of redemption in decimal form. We then took that quotient and multiplied it by 100 to get the rate of redemption as a percentage. The process is as follows:

$ amount redeemed/number of points needed to redeem=rate of redemption (decimal)

Rate of redemption (decimal)*100=rate of redemption (%)

Earning

Cardholders are able to use (and earn points) inside and outside of Lowe's. They receive 2 Lowe's Business Rewards points for each dollar spent at Lowe's and an additional two points on purchases at restaurants, office supply stores, and monthly wireless telephone services in the U.S.

The requested information for Ulta's PLCC credit card has been entered into column Q in the attached spreadsheet. The credit card requires credit approval and allows cardholders the ability to earn 2 points for every $1 spent at Ulta Beauty.

ulta's plcc credit card

Ulta's credit card requires credit approval and can only be used to make purchases at Ulta stores and online at Ulta Beauty. To complete a review of the credit card we reviewed Ulta's website, which provides details on the credit cards benefits and rewards. We also looked at consumer reviews for additional information on how the card and program works.

The Ulta rewards program has three tiers which can be used with Ulta's credit card. With a $450 spend at Ulta cardholders unlock additional perks, including point expiring after a year, and not after three months. Credit cardholders receive 20% off their first purchase and do not pay an annual fee.

A review of Ulta's website and consumer reviews show that credit cardholders do not receive additional conviences, such as curbside pickup and mobile payments. Ulta's credit card can only be used at Ulta and points can only be redeemed at Ulta Beauty, there is no co-branding with the card.

Tractor Supply Competitive, Part 7c: Ulta Mastercard

In rows 4-18 of column R on the attached spreadsheet we have provided earning, redemption, and benefit information on Ulta's Mastercard credit card. Below is a brief overview of our findings.

Calculations

In order to calculate the credit card's rate of redemption in percentages we took the dollar amount redeemed and divided it by the number of points needed to redeem. We then took the quotient of those two numbers and multiplied it by 100 to get the percentage. The process is as follows:

$ amount redeemed/number of points needed to redeem=rate of redemption (decimal)

Rate of redemption (decimal)*100=rate of redemption (%)

Benefits

Ulta's Mastercard's benefits include 20% off the first purchase at Ulta, no annual fee, 2 points for every $1 spent at Ulta, 1 point for every $3 spent outside of Ulta, and 500 Welcome Bonus Points when you spend $500 in the first 90 days outside of Ulta. Our research reviewed the Home Depot Project Loan MasterCard in column S of the attached spreadsheet. The Home Depot Project Loan MasterCard is not a reward based card and therefore much of the information was not applicable. The Home Depot Project Loan MasterCard offers larger loan amounts up to $55,000, intended for larger home projects.

The Home Depot Project Loan Mastercard

We began our research by reviewing Home Depot's website for information on its Project Loan MasterCard. The card has a number of benefits, including a low APR of 7.99%, 84 months to pay, no annual fee, and interest only payments for the first six months. Home Depot's website makes no mention of any reward benefits for Project Loan MasterCard cardholders, but to confirm this we searched for credit card reviews, to see if there were any additional benefits not listed on Home Depot's website. We next looked for consumer reviews to see if any mentioned any more rewards or benefits. Based on this information the Home Depot Project Loan MasterCard is not a reward based card.

Home Depot does have a mobile app but as the Project Loan MasterCard does not give cardholders to ability to earn or redeem points the ability to use the app for this benefit is not relevant.

Tractor Supply Competitive, Part 9b: Target REDcard Debit

Target's RED Card Debit saves 5% on every purchase using this card. Additionally, it saves 5-50% using Cartwheel on items in stores. It offers 2-day free shipping if customer purchase through Target.com. We have compiled our findings in column U for Target's REDcard debit card in the attached spreadsheet.

After an extensive search through the public domain, we were unable to find some of the required information for Target's RED Card Debit including the points, redemption, and tiers.

METHODOLOGY

We began searching for the REDcard data on business sites or marketing sites such as Forbes, Business Insider, and Marketing Week in order to find some information about the points as they record loyalty programs as a marketing move. However, no such information was found. Only, Investopedia mentioned about this Red Card Target.

Our next strategy was to look for any case study on Target's REDcard to understand more about the program and the points or redemption information. One case study was found on smile.io. However, it did not provide information on points, redemption, or tier program.

Later, we tried to find the data in money saving sites and money management sites such as Wallet Hacks, MoneyCrashers, and Magnify Money. We looked at these sources as they provide some insights about money management and savings for people who want to save more while shopping. Money Crasher shows no detailed information on points and redemption program, however, mentioned about the benefits and fee to join this Target REDcard Debit.

Based on our research, we have assumed that the information on points, redemption, or tier program are not available in public for this loyalty card since the beginning of the release. This card only provides a discount on Target and its partners.

Target's REDcard debit card

Target REDcard debit card has a number of benefits which include it offers 5% off to customers on every purchase. Target will offer REDcard holders early access to select products and promotions. Customers can now save 5% to 50% using "Cartwheel on items in stores and save an extra 5% with REDcard."
