Total Number of Traffic Light Intersections, US Major Cities

There is an average of 3,355 signalized intersections in the major cities in the United States. 38 cities in the United States have a population of over 500,000 people. Below is an overview of our fidnings.

Findings

To provide an estimate of the total number of intersections in major U.S. cities that use traffic light, we found the average number of signalized intersections in the top-ten cities (by population) then multiplied the results by the total number of major cities in the United States.

World Population Review provided the top-ten cities by population and then we determined the number of signalized intersections in each as follows:
New York City - 12,460
Los Angeles - 4,400
Chicago - 3, 035
Houston - 2,400
Philadelphia - 2,950
Phoenix - 3,000
San Antonio - 1,400
San Diego - 1,500
Dallas - 1,500
San Jose - 900

Total = 33,545
Average = 33,545/10 = 3,354.5, rounded off to 3,355.

Major cities are defined as those with a population of over 500,000. Based on the data from World Population Review, there are 38 cities that meet this criteria. Therefore, the approximate number of signalized intersections in major cities in the United States = 38 X 3,355 = 127,490
