What are the total number of high schools (also known as secondary schools) and universities (known as tertiary) in Europe?
Hi there! Thanks for your question about the total number of secondary and tertiary schools in Europe. The short answer is that there are 79,832 secondary schools and 4,750 tertiary schools in Europe. Below you will find a deep-dive of our methodology and findings, along with this spreadsheet with the information from the original request compiled with the information that we found.
METHODOLOGY
We began by becoming familiar with your original request, as well as the terminology for European education, in order to provide the most consistent and well-informed numbers available. Following this, we were able to locate the number of secondary and tertiary schools in 14 European countries using government education reports and trusted media sites. We have compiled the information from these 14 countries in the spreadsheet from the original request. Each country's total number of secondary and tertiary schools is a total sum of both private and state schools. For the secondary schools specifically, this total reflects both general, special, private, and vocational secondary schools.
NOTES ON CERTAIN COUNTRIES
Since you are interested in population size, we have compiled a list reflecting the population size and other data for certain countries. Since this information did not fit the format of the spreadsheet, we opted to leave it off. For each country with additional information about their schools, we have added a * next to the country name on the spreadsheet.
RUSSIA - 2,052,000 students enrolled in Russia's 2,649 state and municipal secondary professional schools.
TURKEY - A total of 351,000 students enrolled in Turkey's foundation Universities; 5.5 million enrolled in Turkey's 104 public universities.
SERBIA - The number reflected for tertiary schools on the spreadsheet (total: 82) includes schools who have applied for accreditation. There are 14 accredited schools and 86 schools that have applied for accreditation.
KOSOVO - The University of Pristina is the only University in Kosovo. This university "has 14 faculties and 6 higher schools. The university offers four types of educational programmes."
BELGIUM - Of the 1,114 secondary schools in Belgium, 1,067 are full-time schools, while 47 are part-time schools. Additionally, of the 84 tertiary schools, only 8 are accredited state universities.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
We have included the additional 14 countries listed on the spreadsheet. After confirming with admin support, we have determined that the addition of 14 countries is within the scope of a single Wonder request. However, during our research, it came to our attention that there are 12 other countries (not including Vatican City) that are a part of the European continent. Those countries are as follows:
--Switzerland
--San Mariano
--Portugal
--Gibraltar
--Andorra
--Norway
--Greenland
--Ukraine
--Moldova
--Belarus
--Liechtenstein
--Monaco
We are happy to include these on the spreadsheet as a follow-up request to this one!
CONCLUSION
In short, there are at least 79,832 secondary schools, and 4,750 tertiary schools in Europe. The country with the largest amount of secondary schools is Poland with 13,950. The country with the largest amount of tertiary schools is Russia with 1,090. The information has been compiled into this spreadsheet by country and school type (secondary and tertiary).
