Total Number of Companies that Expanded Their Operations in the US
Based on information from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), there were an estimated 618 expansions into the United States in 2017. There will be an estimated 593 expansions in 2018.
Because the BEA does not publish official data on the amount of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the U.S. until July of the following year, the numbers for both 2017 and 2018 are estimates based on information from 2014-2016. We supplemented it with information from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTD) about larger investment trends that were used to predict future shifts.
Information from the BEA showed that 936 companies expanded their operations into the United States in 2016. Since the number of expansions roughly correlates to the amount of FDI flowing into the U.S., we can use FDI as an indicator to estimate the number of expansions. According to UNCTD, the amount of FDI in North America declined in 2017 by 33% compared to 2016. Thus, a 33% decline in expansions from 2016 would yield 618, our estimate for 2017.
We then used the same method to project forward into 2018. The investment site Trading Economics predicts a 4% decrease in FDI flowing into the U.S. across 2018. Thus, a 4% decrease in the number of expansions yields 593.
