Research Strategy

The research team began with searching for a pre-compiled list of top fleet car leasing companies in the US (based on revenue) by scouring through the various industry reports from MarketWatch, Deloitte, Mckinsey, RFDTV, Digital Journal, ResearchandMarkets, IBIS World, etc. We also searched through various media articles from Forbes, WSJ, Bloomberg, Reuters, Live Mint, etc and company blogs such as 'Doering Fleet' but none of the sources provided a pre-compiled list of top players in the US fleet car leasing market based on revenue. However, through these sources, we were successful in finding a list of key players operating in the fleet car leasing market. We leveraged the same to prepare a comprehensive list of key industry players that were repeated across the various industry reports mentioned above and filtered the ones which are headquartered in the US. The team then identified the top 3 players from this list based on revenue. Since all the players were private in nature, we have used the estimated revenue from the credible company databases such as Hoovers, Crunchbase, Zoominfo, etc or media articles to establish the top players. Also, since all the players are predominant in fleet car leasing, we have assumed that the majority of the revenue for each company is from this segment only. We have taken care to exclude all the top players which were identified in the Strategy document.

Research Strategy

We attempted to find the top fleet car leasing companies in the U.S. by the size of their customer base, but unfortunately, this is not a metric by which companies are typically compared. There were statistics on revenue and number of vehicles, and even on funding and the number of vehicles that were remarketed. However, customer bases for fleet leasing companies remained elusive. To find this information, we primarily searched through industry publications, assuming that this information would be provided to businesses in the market. This is also how we found the other statistics, but there was no information on customer bases. We then attempted to find the customer base sizes for the fleet leasing companies that had the most vehicles, but we failed here as well, since none of the companies provided solid numbers on how many customers they serve.

Then, we turned to trusted media outlets in an attempt to locate quotes from company executives about the size of their customer bases. There were few articles in media publications outside of the industry about fleet leasing companies and the ones we did locate did not have any information about customer base size. Therefore, we determined that a company would only have the number of vehicles on hand that it needed to service its customers and decided that the more vehicles a company has available, the larger its customer base would be. As such, we assumed that the companies with more vehicles have more customers.

RESEARCH STRATEGY

We began the research by searching for a pre-compiled list of the top fleet car leasing companies in the U.S. We did this by scouring through news articles, industry reports, research studies, surveys, and media publications from websites such as IBISWorld, Deloitte, Bloomberg, MarketWatch, and Forbes. While we were successful in finding pre-compiled information of the top companies in the car leasing space by fleet size, we discovered that data of top companies in the space by geographic reach is not a metric that is normally used when it comes to comparing companies in the industry. We also leveraged social media platforms such as LinkedIn to explore the profiles of several key players in the fleet management and car leasing industry in the U.S. in the hopes of finding information that would prove useful to us. Throughout the course of the research, we found that Enterprise Fleet Management and Element Fleet Management have a significantly higher number of locations/offices when compared to others in the space. We identified them as one of the top fleet companies, as having more brick and mortar establishments would generally translate to a wider geographic reach nationwide. Therefore, in order to determine the other five top fleet car leasing companies, we looked at other metrics that are correlated with geographical reach. For example, a greater number of fleet size would generally mean an increased capacity to serve more areas. As such, we made the assumption that companies with more vehicles at their disposal have better means to service more areas. The companies that we have identified are Enterprise Fleet Management, Element Fleet Management, ARI, Wheels Inc, Donlen, EMKAY, and Lease Plan.
