Top Tax Preparation Software for Households
Research has been completed on ten tax preparation companies to unearth how many tax returns they filed during 2017 on behalf of individuals and households. None of the companies provide a breakdown or segmentation as to how many tax returns were filed on behalf of individuals, households, or businesses. Alternative data, such as the number of all filings for each company during 2017, was available and recorded but excluded based on the requirements of this specific brief. Several companies research, such as FreeTaxUSA, ESmartTax, and Credit Karma, do not make any of their tax filings public data for any year.
As was presented in previous research, the tax preparation services listed below do not provide segmented breakdowns of tax return filings to the public. To re-verify this information, each company’s press releases and annual reports were checked, as well as their official websites. None of the companies provided segmented breakdowns of their filings by individuals, households, or businesses. Figures were found for the majority of the researched companies of overall filings for either global or US returns for individual years, but were excluded from this brief due to not meeting the outlined requirements.
In addition to this research, we carefully examined each company’s public financial reports that were filed to the SEC (where available). Being that some of the researched companies are not public, they do not provide annual reports to shareholders. It was our hope that these financial reports would provide statistics on the filing of tax returns during the 2017 tax season, as some companies will provide summaries of their annual activity in such reports. This research did not yield any profitable information. LibertyTax provided information on overall figures on tax reports filed in their financial report for 2017's tax season.
Finally, we attempted to look through several third-party resources including review websites in the hopes of discovering a quote or figure that could reveal of the number of tax returns filed by the respective companies by individuals and households.
We researched the following companies:
- H&R Block
- Credit Karma
- Jackson Hewitt
