What are the top SMB fleet management companies in the US?
Hello! Thank you for your question about the top SMB fleet management companies in the United States. Per our administrative team, I have compiled a profile for the top five companies in the small to mid-sized range of your requested market space. The companies I have chosen to profile, based on their Owler data and industry profiles, are Track Your Truck, GPS Trackit, Spireon, Inc., GPS Insight, LLC., and NexTraq. For good measure, I have also included a profile for Omnitracs. Omnitracs is not considered a SMB, as it has a staff that exceeds the industry standard for a SMB. However, I selected Omnitracs as the industry baseline/control organization for the research process based on your example company list.
The detailed information pertaining to the fleets managed and the corporate clients of each organization is very limited. I have provided client information where possible, along with minor details about product offerings.
In my deep dive below, you will find a breakdown of my findings and more detail about my research methodology and process.
METHODOLOGY
I began the research process by looking for pre-compiled, industry-relevant rankings. Though I found a number of lists, these lists failed to quantify any of the named businesses as "top." From there, I began searching for industry leaders on Owler and Hoovers. Using the example companies, I was able to build a list of companies by comparing Owler profiles. I went on to structure a list of competing industry providers, ranked by revenue, from lowest to highest. I then searched for detailed company information pertaining to each organization, thereby constructing a comprehensive profile for each company.
INSIGHTS
To find competing organizations, I defined fleet management as "an administrative approach that allows companies to organize and coordinate work vehicles with the aim to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and provide compliance with government regulations. While most commonly used for vehicle tracking, fleet management includes following and recording mechanical diagnostics and driver behavior."
Each of the companies on the below list is ranked by revenue and fits the above industry definition, though the functional approach used by each company varies to some degree.
1) TRACK YOUR TRUCK
Track Your Truck (TYT) was founded in 1998 in Lynchburg, VA. The company is privately owned and is currently overseen by company president, Robert J. Hall. TYT has an annual revenue of around $15 million and manages an estimated total of ten employees.
According to TYT's Owler profile and LinkedIn page, the company maintains a primary function of GPS Vehicle Tracking Services. "TYT is fully web-based, and has no software involved. You can even track your vehicle from any mobile phone with an internet connection."
The company now has offices in New Lenox, Illinois and serves customers in the U.S. and abroad. Unfortunately, there is no publicly available information providing the depth of TYT's customer base, but product demos are available by request through their website.
2) GPS TRACKIT
GPS Trackit was founded in 1999 in Henderson, NV. The company is a privately owned subsidiary of Inverness Graham. GPS Trackit has an estimated annual revenue of $17.8 million and manages an estimated 62 employees.
According to Owler, "GPSTrackit develops a GPS fleet tracking platform that offers vehicle management solutions for transportation, construction and healthcare sectors."
The founder of GPS Trackit is John (Nero) Stull. Some of the organization's clients include FedEx, Mr. Rooter, 1-800-Got-Junk?, Penske, Best Western and The Ohio State University.
Though I was unable to determine the full depth of the company's customer base, it's safe to say their managed fleet size is substantial, especially given the aforementioned client list.
According to their website, "GPS Trackit is a software product development company that delivers a powerful and highly customizable suite of web-based fleet management solutions. Our solutions are specifically designed to help your company improve operations, reduce costs, and boost productivity."
3) SPIREON, INC.
Spireon was founded in 2002 in Irvine, CA. Spireon has an estimated annual revenue of $22.5 million and manages a team of an estimated 369 employees. Spireon's CEO is Kevin Weiss.
According to their website, Spireon has more than 3.7 million subscribers across multiple industries. Their premier fleet management product is called "FleetLocate." This product is designed to, "Reduce fuel costs, idle time, labor and fleet mileage while maximizing the quantity of work accomplished with Spireon’s fleet management solutions. Ensuring your fleet is running optimally is key to delivering great service, and great service means repeat customers who help grow your business. Spireon’s GPS fleet tracking and management solutions gives you intelligence on how your fleet is performing – by driver and by vehicle. Whether your fleet is small or a large enterprise, we can help you reduce risk and operate more effectively."
They offer several different packages under the FleetLocate product line and they do allow a "test drive" of the product.
4) GPS INSIGHT, LLC.
GPS Insight was founded by Rob Donat (CEO) in 2004, in Scottsdale, AZ. The company is privately owned and operates in the internet software space. GPS Insight has an estimated annual revenue of $33.9 million and manages an estimated 124 employees.
GPS Insight offers a number of fleet management products designed to suit fleets of all sizes. They currently track around 100,000 vehicles/assets and claim that, "GPS Insight works with businesses and government entities that have fleets of vehicles and other mobile assets to solve your unique challenges through increased revenue, reduced costs, and reduced risk."
5) NEXTRAQ
NexTraq was founded in 2000 in Atlanta, GA, and is currently managed by Steve Pitsos (GM). The company has an estimated revenue of $42.8 million and an estimated 125 employees.
NexTraq is part of FleetCor Technologies and is currently an industry leader in telematics ("The branch of information technology that deals with the long-distance transmission of computerized information.").
The company offers a number of different fleet management packages and has published a number of case studies on the web, highlighting the process and benefits the service has brought to each client.
According to their website, "At NexTraq®, we provide the most comprehensive and reliable GPS fleet tracking solution in the industry. Want proof? Review our case study library to learn about real-world examples of how the NexTraq GPS Fleet Management solution saves our customers time, money and resources."
** OMNITRACS
Omnitracs was founded in 1988 as a privately owned subsidiary of Vista Equity Partners Mangement, LLC. Omnitracs operates in the systems software industry sector and is currently overseen by CEO, John Graham.
According to their website, "Omnitracs LLC is the global pioneer of innovative software and SaaS fleet management solutions serving the transportation sector. Leveraging unmatched industry knowledge and resources, we help companies of all sizes improve the productivity, reliability, routing, safety, and compliance of their transportation assets."
Omnitracs offers a number of comprehensive products that include telematics, tracking and safety. It's unclear exactly how many vehicles are monitored by Omnitracs, but I was able to confirm a minimum of 56 corporate clients, including Pepsi, Averitt and Peapod.
CONCLUSION
To recap, the top five companies in the small to mid-sized range of the fleet management market space include Track Your Truck, GPS Trackit, Spireon, Inc., GPS Insight, LLC., and NexTraq. These companies are all U.S. based and have been ranked based on estimated annual revenue and their positions in the SMB arena. Though I chose Omnitracs as a baseline per your example list, Omnitracs is not considered a SMB, as it has a staff that exceeds the industry standard for a SMB (small businesses have fewer than 100 employees and mid-sized businesses have fewer than 999 employees).
We welcome the opportunity to provide information on the next ten SMB companies in a separate request. However, please note, many of the closest industry competitors are headquartered outside the United States. As such, it may be beneficial to expand the geographic limitations on the research.
