Who are top nootropic companies?
Hello! Thanks for your question about the top nootropic companies. The short version is that I found a very useful market report that listed some of the key players in this space. I attempted to refine the list to rank the companies by revenue. However, this proved to be very difficult due to an absence of publicly available data. See below for a deep dive of my findings.
METHODOLOGY
To complete this request, I first searched through industry reports and trusted media sites for any existing information that could be used to determine the top players in this space. Because there was no geographic scope defined, I took a global focus. To guide my search, I used revenue as the criteria in which to define "top."
The most useful report I found was a recent report aimed at industry, investors, developers, and company executives with information on the prospects of the global nootropics products market that outlined key players. Although the full report was locked behind a paywall, I was able to access a list of some of the key players. From this list of key players, I did an exhaustive search of multiple business databases including, Owler, Manta, Buzzfile, Hoovers, Crunchbase, and Edgar (the Securities and Exchange Commission of filings) to find company revenues and determine which ones were "top" players. However, as the companies are private and not all of them are from the United States, data was limited. I was able to find revenue for six out of the list of thirteen companies.
However, another complicating factor arose that limited a reliable ranking of the key players by revenue and that was that the companies were a mixture of old and new companies. Due to this fact, some were focused only on nootropics while others clearly had other revenue streams from vitamins supplements that were not necessarily nootropic. This was especially true for older companies such as Cephalon Inc. who were founded in 1987 and had comparatively large revenues, and the nootropic portions of the revenue were not distinguished.
Because revenue was limited, I tried several other strategies. Another way to determine key players can be by the size of their workforce. Therefore, I also searched the number of employees in the business databases, but the data on the number of employees was even more limited than revenue and not a good indicator. Yet another strategy I tried was to look into the amount of investment funding each company had received but unfortunately, this did not yield any insightful data either.
Through this process, I created a spreadsheet that I have attached so that you can see what data was available. For each company I have listed the following details:
-Company Name
-Website
-Revenue
-Total Equity Funding (where applicable and available)
-Number of Employees
-Location
-Source links for revenue
-Source links for equity funding
While I could not refine the list of key players into a ranked list of top companies, I have still provided the list for you below. You will find each company has a link to their website. I was also able to gather some other information about this topic, which I think will be helpful for you. 1) the global nootropics market size, 2) information on the largest segments of this sector 3) an outline of the largest nootropic markets geographically and some driving forces behind them.
I have organized my findings into the following sections:
1. List of key players
2. Global nootropics market size and projections
3. Market segmentation
4. Nootropic markets by geographic region
FINDINGS
1. LIST OF KEY PLAYERS
2. GLOBAL NOOTROPICS MARKET SIZE & PROJECTIONS
In 2015, the global nootropics market was $1,346.5 million, and it is expected to reach $6,059.4 million by 2024. It is estimated to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 17.9% from 2016 to 2024.
3. MARKET SEGMENTATION
In 2015, memory enhancing nootropics held the largest market share of nootropics. This is thought to be a result of the increased awareness among students and the working population around the benefits of nootropics. In 2015, the memory enhancement segment for nootropics was $391.6 Million.
4. NOOTROPIC MARKETS BY GEOGRAPHIC REGION
In 2015, North America was the largest market for nootropic drugs. This is thought to be driven by rising populations, increased consumer awareness for preventive and cognitive healthcare, and the evolution of the "self-directed consumer." Europe was found to be the second largest market for nootropic drugs. In Europe, the market is driven by the increase in the demand for cognitive healthcare products, particularly by young people. The next largest region which is also expected to be the fastest growing in the future is the Asia Pacific region. The main reasons that this growth is expected is because of the population increase as well as regulatory systems that are favorable to the nootropics market.

SUMMARY
To wrap it up, I found a list of some of the key players in the global nootropics market and provided publicly available details about them in the attached spreadsheet. I also provided some information on the global nootropics market size and projections, market segmentation, and comparison of market size by geographic region.
