Research Strategy

We scoured through various lists of top grocery brands in the US including Supermarket News, Food Industry, ScrapeHero, Dunnhumby’s Retailer Preference Index (RPI) report, BizVibe, and USA By Numbers.
We selected the top 25 brands from the list provided by Supermarket News because it listed the top brands using annual sales revenue. It also provided only parent companies and listed their subsidiaries. We excluded pharmacy brands such as Walgreens Boots Alliance, CVS, and Rite Aid. We also excluded non-US brands including Couche-Tard, Loblaw, Seven & i Holdings, Sobeys, and Metro. Associated Wholesale Grocers, Inc. (AWG) was also excluded because it is not a typical grocery brand but a cooperative food wholesaler to independently owned supermarkets. We included Whole Foods Market since it is a grocery brand, it is the only subsidiary company on the list and It is owned by Amazon.
