Research Strategy:

To ensure the most accurate information, we checked several lists and sites such as NewYorkSchoolTalk, SchoolDigger, GreatSchools, InsideSchools, and Niche, among others. We also checked articles about the subject on sites like The New York Post, The New Yorker, Reader’s Digest, etc. In order to provide an unbiased list, we cross-referenced each list and only included in our initial list schools that appear in more than one site.
We then verified each school individually, sites like InsideSchools and GreatSchools were used, but your main source of information was the NYC Department of Education. There we checked performance on state tests, teachers and family opinions and quality scores. From there we eliminated schools, according to academic performance, until we reached the top 10.
For clarity: The average test score for NYC is 45%, every school included in this list is 80% or above. The schools are displayed in no particular order.
Private Schools: Even though there are private schools that rank high in overall education lists, most of them are K-12 and don’t disclose (or don't take them) test scores for elementary schools. We could find SAT results as well as college admissions stats, but nothing on elementary school results. Also, worth noting that private schools don't appear in any lists about elementary schools in Brooklyn (there are some in Manhattan). The highest ranked private schools in Brooklyn are Packer Collegiate Institute, Poly Prep Country Day School, Saint Ann’s School, Berkeley Carroll School and Grace Church School.
