METHODOLOGY

In order to finalize the twelve top companies that could qualify for the given criteria, i.e. biggest in terms of revenue and company size, the company must be headquartered in San Diego, and excluding educational institutions and government entities, our first approach is to look at any available precompiled lists which ranks top companies in the city either by revenue or by company size. The first approach did not yield a robust result. Some lists were published more than 5 years ago, some were not headquartered in the city and some were based on employee's rating. Hence, we utilize the Hoovers database (and also cross-checked it with the lists) and sort it by location. We only considered those companies that are headquartered in San Diego and determined those with the highest sales revenues. We then double-checked each company's recent number of employees, their revenues, and their office HQ address.

Los Angeles - Top Companies by Revenue Part Two

Twelve top companies in Los Angeles, California according to estimated annual revenue are KB Home, VCA, Mercury Insurance, 99 Cents Only Stores, Guess?, Oaktree Capital, J2 Global, The Honest Company, Boingo Wireless, Loot Crate, Fullscreen Media, and Insomniac Games.

METHODOLOGY

Using two pre-compiled lists of the largest companies in California and Los Angeles County, I was able to identify 12 additional top companies headquartered in Los Angeles based on revenue. These sources include Los Angeles Almanac's "Largest Publicly-Owned Companies
Based in Los Angeles County", which is ranked by sales and Built In Los Angeles' "Meet LA's Top 100 tech companies," which is ranked by employee count. Typically, higher sales and employee counts positively correlate to revenue, so I believe the 12 companies I have included here are among the companies with the highest revenue headquartered in Los Angeles. It is possible there are smaller companies that did not make these lists that have slightly higher revenues than some of the 24 we have put on our full list, but as the request only called for 24 of the top companies by revenue in Los Angeles rather than the top 24, we feel confident the companies we have provided across the two requests satisfy the requirements of the project.

Using the two pre-compiled lists, I first culled the companies not headquartered in Los Angeles and those identified in the first request. I was able to identify nine additional companies that have a Los Angeles address. Using company annual reports for public companies and Owler for private companies, I ranked these nine companies in order from the highest revenue to the lowest.

The remaining three companies I found are located in Hollywood (6.5 miles from Los Angeles), City of Commerce (7.3 miles from Los Angeles), and Burbank (12 miles from Los Angeles). Both lists that I consulted counted these three cities as existing in the "Los Angeles area." Therefore, when I was unable to find a full 12 additional companies, I expanded my search to include Hollywood, City of Commerce, and Burbank to find the three more I needed to complete the list. Again, I used company annual reports and Owler to find revenue numbers for these three businesses. Then, I inserted them on our list according to their revenues.

After identifying the 12 additional companies, I turned my attention to finding major news about each one. Unfortunately, most companies did not have any major news within the past 24 months. Instead, most news stories concern the hiring of new executives, acquisitions, or business decisions. However, I was able to find at least one recent article for each company, even if they aren't considered "major news" articles.

METHODOLOGY

--Fortune 1000 companies based in Arizona
--Forbes America’s Largest Private Companies
--Caspio’s list of Arizona’s public companies (listed by market capitalization)
--Zippia’s list of 100 Biggest Companies in Arizona
For the public companies, the revenue figures and employee count was found in the annual reports or the websites of the companies. We have derived numbers from the 2016 annual report as the 2017 annual report has not been published in most cases. In the case of private companies, we first looked for the information on the company website, in case of unavailability we searched for this information on Owler and reliable media sources.

For the major news on the company, we went back approximately one full year in the press releases of individual companies. In some cases, there is no major news even in the duration of an entire year. Going back a year was necessary as the likelihood of finding major news in a shorter duration is even lesser. Also, going back further than a year may have made the news irrelevant to any developments in the near future. We have chosen a year's time to balance both aspects: unavailability of major news and relevance today.

Las Vegas - Top Companies by Revenue Part Two

1Twelve top companies in Las Vegas, Nevada according to estimated annual revenue are Southwest Gas Holdings, Brady Industries, Golden Entertainment, Diamond Resorts International, Nevada Gold & Casinos, Marshall Retail Group, Full House Resorts, Rimini Street, Tropicana Las Vegas, The Cosmopolitan, HealthCare Partners of Nevada, and El Cortez Hotel & Casino.

Methodology

Using the same source as provided in the first request in this project for consistency's sake, I was able to identify 12 additional top companies headquartered in Las Vegas based on revenue. This source, Zippia's "These Are the 100 Largest Companies in Nevada," is used because although it ranks the companies by the number of employees, this statistic typically correlates to revenue. It is possible there are smaller companies that did not make the top 100 list that have slightly higher revenues than some of the 24 we have put on the list, but as the request only called for 24 of the top companies by revenue in Las Vegas rather than the top 24, we feel confident the companies we have provided across the two requests satisfy the requirements of the project.

Using the Zippia list, I first culled the companies not headquartered in Las Vegas. Then, I removed all 12 companies already identified in the first request. This left me with approximately 50 companies for which I would then go on to research revenues. Using company annual reports for public companies and Owler, Hoovers, Buzzfile, and Manta for private companies, I was able to identify 12 more of the top companies in Las Vegas based on revenue.

After identifying the 12 additional companies, I turned my attention to finding major news about each one. Unfortunately, most companies did not have any major news within the past 24 months. Instead, most news stories concern the hiring of new executives, renovations, or entertainment announcements. However, I was able to find at least one recent article for each company, even if they aren't considered "major news" articles.
