Who are the top 5 competitors in the Smart Home Automation industry in the US? Provide overviews, and volume/annual revenue information.

Hello, and thank you for your question regarding the top five competitors in the smart home automation industry in the US. The short version is that the top 5 competitors, in terms of frequency of use, are Control4, Creston, Savant, RTI, and Elan. According to the CE Pro 100 Brand Analysis Survey of 2016, 60% of installers chose Control4 products. Below you will find a deep dive of our research.

METHODOLOGY

In order to determine which are the top competitors in the smart home automation industry, my colleague and I searched through industry reports, research articles, and trusted media sites to find pertinent information like company names, historic revenue, and sales volumes. Since no specific parameters were set to determine what "top" means in this instance, we decided to use "frequency of use" by contractors and builders as the determining factor. Using this as filter, we were able to find a pre-compiled list of the top 5 brands based on frequency of use according to the CE Pro 100 Brand Analysis survey 2016.
Revenue histories of private companies are not readily available so we used company profile site Owler to find out the revenues of the current period vs. previous year details.
It was difficult to find information on the number of units (volume) sold by each company in a way that can be comparable among the competitors. Therefore, we triangulated the sales volumes of the top 5 competitors (based on frequency of use) shown in this list.

The total number of smart homes sold in US in 2016 was 15 million. Our calculations are as follows:

Number of smart homes sold in 2016 * company share of market based on frequency of use = approximate units sold

1. Control4- 15m x 60%= 9 million units.
2. Crestron- 15m x 43%= 6.45 million units.
3. Savant- 15m x 35%= 5.25 million units.
4. RTI- 15m x 9%= 1.35 million units.
5. Elan- 15m x 7%= 1.05 million units.
