Who are the top 20 energy research institutes, independent and affiliated with a university, in the world, as measured by either patents filed / funding / industrial spinouts?

Hello! Thanks for your question about the top 20 energy research institutes, independent and affiliated with a university, in the world, as measured by either patent filed / funding / industrial spinouts.  The short version is I could not find a pre-compiled list of the top 20 energy research institutes.  I was, however, able to find a list of top 10 energy research institutes. Below you will find a deep dive of my findings.

METHODOLOGY

In order to provide you with an industry recognized list of top energy research institutes, I searched for the top institutes with filed energy patents. I used the Clean Energy Patent Growth Index to form a list of top ten energy research institutes across the world. These institutes are:

1. The University of California Energy Institute (UCEI);
2. The Resnick Sustainability Institute at the California Institute of Technology;
2. Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST),  Energy, Environment, Water, and Sustainability (EEWS) Research Center;
4. Stanford Precourt Institute for Energy;
5. Department of Engineering and System Science at National Tsing Hua University 
6. MIT Energy Initiative;
7. The University of Central Florida, Utilities & Energy Services;
8. Tsinghua-BP Clean Energy Research and Education Center;
9. Penn State Institutes of Energy and the Environment; and
10. New Energy Center in Nanyang Technological University. 

In the attached spreadsheet I have compiled the following information for each of the listed institutes: Name of Institute; Description; Address; Website; Name of Director; and Source of Information.

CONCLUSION

To wrap it up, I have compiled a list of top ten energy research institutes based on the list provided by the Clean Energy Patent Growth Index.  My findings are in the attached spreadsheet.
