Who are the top 10 cannabis companies in the US & Canada that are not publicly traded?
Hello! It is my pleasure to respond to your query about the Top 10 most successful privately-owned cannabis-related businesses in North America. We’ll begin with a brief overview of the North American cannabis industry as a whole, then move into the list you requested.
NORTH AMERICAN CANNABIS INDUSTRY: OVERVIEW
UNITED STATES: Considered one of the fastest-growing markets in the US, according to HuffPo and ArcView Market Research, the US market for medical and recreational cannabis was worth about $2.7 billion in 2014, which was a 74% growth from the previous year. Additionally, they expected growth between 2014 and 2015 to hit 32%, with even more significant growth expected in 2016 and beyond. According to HuffPo, “The report projects that, by 2019, all of the state-legal marijuana markets combined will make for a potential overall market worth almost $11 billion annually.” Companies in California hold the largest market share at 49%, followed closely by Colorado-based companies at 30% of the market.
CANADA: At present, Canada’s cannabis market is much smaller than the US’s with “fewer than 30 government-licensed companies, it generates no more than $150 million in sales”, according to the LA Times. According to PharmaCan, “Health Canada estimates a $1.3 billion industry by 2024” in Canada. Medical cannabis has been legal in Canada since 2001, and if the country legalizes recreational cannabis next year, like analysts predict, “Canada is now positioned to take a lead in the booming multi-billion-dollar industry”. In Canada, “Only producers who are authorized to produce and sell to the public may sell or provide dried marijuana, fresh marijuana or cannabis oil to eligible persons,” according to Health Canada. There are only 305 total licensed organizations in the whole country, with 20 of them being located in Ontario. I’ve provided a link to the Health Canada site that lists all of the companies licensed to grow/distribute medical cannabis or cannabis oil in Canada. The list includes their locations, license types, dates of initial licensing, license statuses, and contact information.
Next, we’ll look at the Top 10 most-profitable, privately-held Cannabis growers/producers in North America, however, these will all be based in the United States (see explanation for this). For each, I’ve listed the company position (by revenue), name, location, and financials, as requested.
Please Note: I have removed Canada from this list since the markets are so different (US includes both legal and medical cannabis, while Canada only includes medical), and since all of the 35 licensed producers in Canada appear to be publicly-traded companies. Also Note: The information was very difficult to find. In the US, the highest-grossing companies are all publicly-traded (many of them newly so), and those that are privately-owned often do not disclose their financials publicly.
