Research strategy

To determine the major companies in the temp agency market, we started our search by looking into reports by agencies who were specialists in this domain. We found that Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA) compiled a list of the largest staffing firms globally each year. However, the latest rankings available were for the year 2017 as the 2018-list could only be accessed by members. The 2017 list provided the list of the largest staffing companies globally. However, their list did not make a distinction between temporary staffing agencies and general staffing agencies.

To determine if the agencies mentioned specialized in temporary staffing, we looked into the annual reports published by reputable recruitment portals (such as Payscale, Glassdoor) and social networking sites for professionals i.e. LinkedIn. However, these sources, at the most, provided reports on the scope of staffing and not on the staffing agencies.

We also looked into market research sources (such as Markets and Markets, GM Insights, Grandview Research, and Ibis World) to determine the overall market leaders. The portion of the reports published by these agencies that were accessible did not mention the top players in the industry but only provided information on the market size.

We looked into reports published by trusted business media (such as Forbes, Business Insider, Inc.com) and reports prepared by reputed consultancies (such as McKinsey, Bain, BCG, Deloitte, among others). These sources either provided the total market size or referred to the SIA list while giving out no further details on temporary staffing industry players.

Last, while looking into sources such as Medium, Balance, Verge and LinkedIn blogs and came across the list by Betterteam, which provided information on 75 staffing agencies. As the list included players such as Randstad and Adecco, which were global players, it was considered. This list provided a sub-list of 10 companies titled 'Top Temporary Staffing Agencies'. This list was further analyzed as described below.

Betterteam's list was ranked according to revenues. We searched for the revenue of the ten companies listed on their company website and company databases (such as Hoovers, ZoomInfo, Manta, CB Insights, Crunchbase). Since these were private companies, they did not publish their revenues in publicly filed documents. However, we were able to retrieve the revenues from eight companies. SIA's list had already been ranked according to revenue. We ensured that each of the top companies also provided temporary staffing services.
