Tell me about Revvit's marketshare in the AEC market
Hello, and thank you for your request for information on Revit's market share and that of its competitors. The most useful sources were the annual reports for Autodesk and The Nemetschek Group.
In short, after an extensive search of industry trade publications, annual reports, market research, and authoritative news reports, I have determined that neither Autodesk, nor its top competitors release market share data specific to their Building Information Modeling (BIM) software. However, I have found information on the overall market size, major competitors to Revit, and information on the markets served by the different platforms. You'll find a deep dive of my research below.
BIM OVERVIEW
BIM software, such as Revit, "helps in planning, designing, constructing, operating and maintaining the diverse physical infrastructure coupled with speedy data exchange among the involved entities," according to Allied Market Research. They go on to say that BIM software is deployed either as a cloud-based product or "on premise." Cloud-based applications are predicted to dominate the market in the coming years, due to "cost effectiveness and easy accessibility," according to an Allied press release.
In the summary of its report, Allied indicates that architects are the top users of BIM software, with contractors close behind. All other users are a distant third. (While no specific numbers are shown in the summary, they are presumably available in their paid report.) Transparency Market Research reported that architects held 38% of the global BIM market in 2014, the largest percentage among AECs. They also predict that contractors' use of BIM will grow at a CAGR of 22.7% from 2015 through 2022.
A 2016 UK report from NBS showed that 54% of UK construction industry professionals were using BIM software on some of their projects, with 86% predicting they'll be doing so by 2017.
BIM MARKET SIZE AND GROWTH
Transparency Market Research and Allied Market Research predict that the global BIM market will be between $11.5BN and $11.7BN by 2022. Transparency predicts the market will grow at a CAGR of 19.1% from 2015-2022 and Allied predicts a CAGR of 21.6% between 2016 and 2022. Transparency valued the global market at $2.7BN in 2014. The valued the US market at $919.2MN in 2014 and predict it will increase to $4.05BN by 2022.
According to the Allied report, the "rapidly increasing number of construction projects globally, rising awareness of BIM and associated benefits, and the growing demand for automated models in architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry, have been facilitating its adoption in construction industry, especially for commercial and infrastructure projects." Government mandates are also increasing the adoption of BIM software.
Adoption at SMEs has been slower than at larger firms, according to Transparency. However, they predict that the more cost effective cloud-based products will increase the penetration of BIM products amongst small and medium-sized AECs.
Transparency Market Research says that "countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, France, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, the U.K., and the U.S." have been the biggest adopters of BIM software. They cite North America as the largest region to have adopted BIM, accounting for 33% of the global market in 2014. They predict the region will remain dominant through 2022. Allied says that through 2022, Asia-Pacific will the "fastest growing region owing to the high adoption of BIM in countries such as China, India and Japan." Europe and North America rank second and third in terms of growth through 2022.
Allied also presents a breakdown of market verticals, showing commercial and infrastructure applications growing the fastest, followed by industrial, institutional, and residential. A summary of the report says that the Commercial and Infrastructure segments will represent 63% of the entire global market by 2022, with Infrastructure growing at the fastest rate (as noted above, additional data points are provided in the purchased report). Transparency reports that within the industrial vertical "the rail transit and aviation sector held the majority share of the BIM market revenue generated in 2014 and is expected to maintain its leading position" through 2022.
KEY COMPETITORS
To determine who the primary competitors are in the BIM market, I looked at several sources. First, I looked at the summaries of the two major market research reports that I found on the industry. In its global report on the BIM market, Allied Market Research lists Autodesk, Inc. (Revit and AutoCAD), Nemetschek AG (Vectorworks and ArchiCAD) and Bentley Systems, Inc. (Microstation and Building Suite) as the key players in the market. Other competitors noted by Allied are Beck Technology, Ltd., Dassault Systemes SA, Trimble Navigation Ltd. (Sketchup), Synchro Software Ltd., Pentagon Solutions Ltd., AECOM, and Asite Solutions Limited. Transparency also notes Tekla Corporation and GRAITEC (acquired by Autodesk in 2013).
As details on why these companies were chosen are behind paywalls, I then looked for additional reporting that would shed light on the key competitors. First, I found the 2016 NBS National BIM report. It found that amongst UK construction industry professionals (including architects, contractors, engineers and others), "when producing drawings, Revit is the most popular tool, followed by ArchiCAD, then Vectorworks." Autodesk's AutoCAD LT and AutoCAD ranked third and fourth respectively, followed by Bentley Microstation, Trimble Sketchup and Bentley Building Suite.
Next, I found a Winter 2015 report from business software review site G2Crowd. Based on customer reviews and market presence, G2Crowd determined that Revit and AutoCAD were the BIM industry leaders. They placed ArchiCAD, Vectorworks and DataCAD in the High Performers category. According to their report, "to qualify as a Leader, a product must receive a high customer satisfaction score and have substantial market presence....High Performers have high customer satisfaction scores with a smaller market presence than Leaders."
Based off these four sources, it would appear that Revit, AutoCAD, ArchiCAD and Vectorworks are among the four most popular BIM software products. I will focus the remainder of the research on these four products.
AUTODESK REVIT AND AUTOCAD
Autodesk's Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (“AEC”) division includes Revit, Building Design Suites, Infrastructure Design Suites, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and AutoCAD Map 3D. While the company does not provide detailed figures by product line, they do say in their 2016 Annual Report that the AEC group accounted for 38% of their net revenue that year. With net revenues reported at $2.504BN, AEC revenues would equal $95.1MN (2.504*.38).
According to the Autodesk Annual Report, Revit is "purpose-built for BIM," collecting "information about a building project and allow[ing] this information to be coordinated across all other representations of the project." The Autodesk Revit products include AutoCAD Revit Architecture Suite, AutoCAD Revit MEP Suite, and AutoCAD Revit Structure Suite. The Annual Report goes on to say that Revit software products are designed for "architects; mechanical, electrical, and plumbing ("MEP") engineers; structural engineers; design-build teams; and other design and building industry professionals."
Autodesk's Annual Report also describes their AutoCAD products within the AEC segment. AutoCAD Civil 3D is a "surveying, design, analysis, and documentation solution for civil engineering, including land development, transportation, and environmental projects." The product is used by civil engineers, designers, drafters and surveyors. AutoCAD Map 3D provides, according to the Annual Report, "direct access to data needed for infrastructure planning, design, and management activities." It is used on "transportation, land development, water, and power projects."
In February 2015, Autodesk announced that it would be transitioning from a perpetual license model to one that is subscription based. Revit is available with a monthly subscription of $250. Single and multi-year subscriptions range from $2,000 - $5,400. AutoCAD products are also available on a monthly or annual subscription basis. AutoCAD is $185 per month and multi-year subscriptions range from $1,470 - $3,970. AutoCAD Civil 3D is listed at $2,100 per year.
Autodesk also offers an AEC collection which includes Revit, AutoCAD Civil 3D, Infraworks, AutoCAD and more. An annual single user subscription for the collection is $2,690.
ARCHICAD AND VECTORWORKS
ArchiCAD (a Graphisoft brand) and Vectorworks are both brands of Nemetschek. The Nemetschek Group describes itself as a "leading global Open BIM software provider for AEC & media industry," according to its fact sheet. In their 2015 Annual Report, the company claims 2.1 million users across its 12 AEC BIM brands.
Both ArchiCAD and Vectorworks fall under the "Design" category of Nemetschek. In 2015, this division of the company accounted for 70% of all revenues, or 198.8MN Euro ($216.04 USD). The Annual Report says Vectorworks and Graphisoft "contributed materially" to these revenues. Nemetschek does not split out revenues by brand.
ArchiCad is a product of Graphisoft which, according to the Nemetschek website, "ignited the BIM revolution in 1984" as the first BIM software product. Graphisoft products, including ArchiCAD, serve 210,000 users globally. On its website, Graphisoft says ArchiCAD is used by "architects, designers, engineers and builders to professionally design, document and collaborate on building projects."
I was not able to find a price for ArchiCAD on Graphisoft's website, nor was one listed on G2Crowd. Free trial versions are available.
The Nemetschek website says that Vectorworks "serves more than half a million designers in the architecture, landscape and entertainment industries." The software is used in 85 countries and supports 10 languages. It is primarily used by architects and landscape designers. The 2015 Annual Report says it is "the most-used CAD program on the Apple Macintosh in the world and is one of the leading programs for Windows." The 2015 MBS National BIM report showed that 29% of respondents preferred Vectorworks Architect, compared to 25% who preferred Revit.
Vectorworks Architect is sold through its US webstore for $2,945. Vectorworks Designer is $3,745. Neither software is subscription based. Additionally, Vectorworks Landmark can be purchased for $2,945 and Vectorworks Fundamentals for $2,145.
CONCLUSION
To sum it up, while market share information for Revit and its competitors was not available, I was able to provide you with overall market information as well as pricing information on three of the top BIM software systems. Autodesk and The Nemetschek Group are two of the major players producing BIM products and the serve a variety of sectors within the AEC industry.
