In Fall 2018, post-secondary institutions in the U.S. had a faculty numbering 1.574 million and a student enrollment of 19.646 million. Generally, public institutions had more faculty and students than private institutions. Below is a comprehensive account of these numbers.

Post-secondary Teachers or Instructors

2018

  • According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2018, 1.351 million post-secondary teachers were employed in the United States. This number is expected to rise by 11 percent between 2018 to 2028, reaching 1.506 million post-secondary teachers in 2028.
  • According to the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), in Fall 2018, degree-granting and non-degree granting post-secondary institutions in the U.S. had a total of 1.574 million faculty (that is, professors, assistant professors, lecturers, associate professors, adjunct professors, instructors, interim professors, and assisting professors).
  • In Fall 2018, degree-granting (award an Associate’s degree or higher) institutions in the U.S. had a total faculty of 1.543 million. Of these faculty, 980,835 were in public institutions, 491,014 were in private nonprofit institutions, and 70,764 were in private for-profit institutions.

  • In Fall 2018, degree-granting post-secondary institutions had a total enrollment of 19.646 million students. Of these students, 16.610 million were in undergraduate and 3.036 million were in post-baccalaureate.
  • In Fall 2018, undergraduate enrollment in degree-granting institutions included 13.049 million (7.503 million in 4-year and 5.547 million in 2-year) students were in public institutions, 2.822 million (2.776 million in 4-year and 45,154 in 2-year) students were in private nonprofit institutions, and 739,256 (585,906 in 4-year and 153,350 in 2-year) students in private for-profit institutions.
  • In Fall 2018, post-baccalaureate enrollment in degree-granting institutions included 1.480 million in public institutions, 1.312 million in private nonprofit institutions, and 243,154 million in private for-profit institutions.

2017

  • According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), in the Fall of 2017, 19.766 million students enrolled in degree-granting post-secondary institutions in the U.S. Of these students, 14.560 million enrolled in public institutions while 5.205 enrolled in private institutions.
  • In Fall 2017, degree-granting post-secondary institutions in the U.S. had an undergraduate enrollment of 16.773 million students and a post-baccalaureate enrollment of 3.005 million students.
  • Fall 2017 undergraduate enrollment included 13.112 million (7.395 million in 4-year and 5.717 million in 2-year) students in public institutions, 2.819 million (2.771 million in 4-year and 48,395 in 2-year) students in private nonprofit, and 841,392 (654,446 in 4-year and 186,916 in 2-year) students in private for-profit institutions.
