Research Strategy:

The research team was unable to find Atlas's company size as well as the annual revenues of both companies.

To begin our search for the restaurants company sizes and annual revenues, we first searched the company's website for their investor relations, annual reports, and SEC filings. However, there was no mention for either employees or annual reports in the websites.

We then decided to expand our search and looked for the parent company, Tavistock Restaurant Collections' annual reports for a breakdown of its revenue by business segment. Unfortunately, this strategy failed as the company did not provide the information either. We further broadened our search and looked for interviews by the leadership of the restaurants or any mentions of the parent company on media sites and review sites like Bloomberg and Glassdoor among others. We anticipated that we would find the revenue of either Tavistock Restaurant Collection or individual restaurants and use the information to estimate the revenue of the company. However, the search proved to be futile too.

Our third strategy was to search through industry databases like Crunchbase, ZoomInfo, LinkedIn, Craft, D&B Hoovers, and Owler among others. From this search we were able to find the number of employees of Blackhawk Grille from its LinkedIn profile. However, we were not successful in finding Atlas's company size from the same platform as it does not have a LinkedIn profile. We were able to get an estimated figure for Tavistock Restaurant Collection annual revenue from D&B Hoovers which we included in the findings. However, there were no other mentions of the restaurants' annual revenues in the aforementioned databases. Our assumption is that since the restaurants are privately held, they are not obligated to publish their financial information.

The research team started this research by searching the company profiles of the two restaurants to see the description of Boxi Park and Cafe del Rey.

First, we checked to see if the two restaurants have their company profiles on Crunchbase but discovered that only Tavistock Restaurant Collection has a profile on Crunchbase. Only the names of the two restaurants are found in the Crunchbase profile of Tavistock Restaurant Collection. We further looked for other credible sources and found company profiles for the two restaurants on Zoominfo. We added brief details for both restaurants along with their websites in the findings.

While we found information for Cañonita, we did not find the number of employees and annual income for Canvas Restaurant & Market. We then extended our search to leverage the two official social media accounts of the latter restaurant, namely Facebook and Instagram, to find any relevant information. However, only a company description was available.
Subsequently, we went through company/organization databases such as Crunchbase, Craft.co, and D&B Hoovers to find information on Canvas. These sources typically present a company's annual income and employee count. Unfortunately, none of them had Canvas in their database.
Finally, we looked for third-party press releases and business association sites such as PR Newswire, Business Insider, and Lake Nona Regional Chamber to find any articles or reports discussing company announcements, news and updates, advertisements, etc. that could provide information on Canvas’ employee count or its annual report. However, this approach was unsuccessful as most of the information was on events and promotions. From the Lake Nona Regional Chamber, we came across the membership profile of Canvas, but only the four leading employees were listed, and it did not mention the number of employees or its annual income.
The lack of information is due to the fact that Canvas Restaurant & Market is a private company, and thus, it is not obliged to publicly disclose financial information or any other internal data.

Thus, the initial research was focused on identifying parameters that fall fit for defining strengths and weaknesses of restaurants. We referred to various articles and papers to confirm how these companies define their positives and negatives.
  • We followed specific approaches to gather information under each criterion
    • Unique Branding — We started with identifying the unique sell points and the key market offerings for each company in question. This was followed by a comparative study with the key sell points and branding done by other players under Travistock. Hence, the best of branding information was deduced by comparison and presented with supported facts.
    • Strengths - Considering from, strengths were measured by various factors like the offerings, service quality, ease of ordering. Timings offered etc. Thus we focused on these values as provided by each restaurant from various sources like website, news section, customer reviews, website rating etc.
    • Weaknesses — Weakness of any company is the most challenging and subjective information since the company never mentions it on any public source. Likewise, we deduced the appropriate weaknesses of these restaurants by precisely looking at the most cited complaints and reviews of customers.

Timpano has only two locations in the US: Ft. Lauderdale, FL and Tampa, FL and has received two accolades in 2014 and 2016.
