Sustainable Packaging Innovations-Part 3

Sustainable packaging innovations released in the last year include L'Oreal's sustainable packaging in partnership with PureCycle, Sharepack’s reusable delivery containers, Ooho's edible drink capsules, and IKEA’s mushroom-based packaging. Complete details about the additional sustainable packaging innovations released in the last year are presented below.

Cosmetics

L'OREAL'S PARTNERSHIP WITH PURECYCLE
  • On July 18, 2019, PureCycle Technologies announced its partnership with cosmetics company, L’Oréal, to supply its Ultra-Pure Recycled Polypropylene (UPRP).
  • For years, L’Oréal has committed to sustainability through a 3R strategy (Respect, Reduce, Replace) that is evidenced in its program, Sharing Beauty With All. With a commitment to increase sustainability for 100% of its new products, 2018 alone saw an improvement in 79% of its new or renovated products.
  • PureCycle's UPRP utilizes a breakthrough technology to produce the only recycled polypropylene that can match the quality of virgin polymers.
  • It is the first company to produce recycled polypropylene for reintegration into "highly sensitive consumer product applications".

Food Service

SHAREPACK REUSABLE DELIVERY CONTAINERS
  • SharePack is a pilot program based in the Netherlands that partners with restaurants to provide re-usable delivery containers.
  • The program is innovatively eliminating single-use plastic delivery containers by partnering with customers as well as restaurants. Customers return containers to drop-off locations where participating restaurants can wash and reuse them.
  • SharePack offers a selection of containers customized to particular foods such as a pizza box, hamburger box, and salad bowl.

Food Packaging

OOHO EDIBLE DRINK CAPSULES
  • Ooho is an edible drink capsule made from Notpla, a material created from seaweed. They can contain any type of drink.
  • It eliminates the need for plastic bottles and doesn't require farmland to grow which reduces hazards to the environment caused by irrigation and fertilizing.
  • The Richmond Marathon provided Lucozade Sport's first opportunity to launch the capsule for marathon runners in September 2018.
SCOBY PACKAGING
  • As part of her graduate program, Roza Janusz has created an edible, biodegradable alternative to plastic packaging.
  • The edible packaging is created from Scoby, the organism also used to brew kombucha, and exists in the form of a delicate membrane ideal for packaging semi-dry foods.
  • MakeGrow, the creator of Scoby packaging, was founded in 2019.
PEEL SAVER
  • Designed by Italians, Simone Caronni, Paolo Stefano Gentile and Pietro Gaeli, Peel Saver is a sustainable packaging for fries made entirely from recycled potato skins. It solves the dual problem of potato-peel waste and paper waste in the fry industry.
  • The all-natural wrapping is created by forming a pulp from the potato peels, drying them in circular sheets, and wrapping them into a cone shape.
  • Peel Saver won the Naba Design Award in 2018 for best technical, materials and innovation project.

Retail

IKEA'S MUSHROOM-BASED PACKAGING
  • Partnering with Ecovative Design, IKEA has incorporated packaging that utilizes their 100% biodegradable mushroom-based product.
  • Evocative Design created Mushroom Packaging by growing mushrooms near clean agricultural waste like corn stalks or husks. After only days, fungus fibers bind the plant waste and allows it to dry which prevents further growth. This product biodegrades in a matter of weeks, as opposed to polystyrene which takes thousands of years.
  • IKEA's use of Mushroom Packaging was announced in Jun 2019.
BERISFORDS RECYCLED RIBBONS
  • Berisfords is a British company that manufactures bows, ribbons, and other materials for product packaging.
  • Berisfords, in partnership with yarn supplier NEWLIFE, created a double-sided, satin packaging ribbon entirely made from recycled plastic bottles.
  • Berisfords launched their ribbons made from recycled materials in September 2019 at the EasyFairs exhibition.

Print Media

BIOPLAST 300
  • The Guardian has begun to use compostable potato-based film to wrap its newspapers, calling it Bioplast 300.
  • Bioplast 300 took ten months to develop, can be produced quickly, and holds up to the wear-and-tear of home delivery. It is composed of compounded potato starch and other biodegradable additives, "does not contain volatile or GM ingredients and is 100% biodegradable".
  • The Guardian launched this new packaging in January 2019.

Research Strategy

In order to find nine additional sustainable packaging innovations from the last year, your research team searched news and magazine articles, company websites, and interviews for information regarding key companies and overall trends. We were successful in identifying nine distinct innovations and locating background information for each.

While we were able to locate launch dates for eight of the innovations, we were not able to locate an official 'release date' for Peel Saver. This information may not be available because the innovation is a result of academic study and has yet to be manufactured on a large scale. After searching through various news reports and packaging industry design reports regarding the Peel Saver, the team determined there are no launch dates to report. The strategies we used to make this determination included a review of media reports featuring the innovative design, as well as interviews with the three designers (Simone Caronni, Pietro Gaeli and Paolo Stefano). We also searched through company profile databases (e.g., Crunchbase) for the company the three designers started (3L Design) but there were no references to an official date or start of promotions for the project. However, we were able to locate an award that the product received in 2018 for innovation. From this, we were able to assume that a product receiving an innovation award would have been created in the year that it received the award.
