Surgical RN salaries and benefits working in Maui, Hawaii

Hello! Thank you for your request regarding the average salary of a Registered Nurse (RN) in Hawaii and/or other resort destinations. The short answer is that an RN in Hawaii can expect to make between $67,000 and $90,000 annually, depending on a number of factors such as location, job duties, prior experience, and education. You will see a deep dive of my findings below.

SALARY
The average hourly wage of an RN in Hawaii is $40.75, which amounts to a salary of $84,750. This is compared to the average income of an RN in the United States, which is $67,930, based on an hourly wage of $32.66. This salary does vary throughout a number of locations in Hawaii. For example, the salary of an RN in Honolulu is slightly higher than the state-wide average, at $87,630; however, in locations such as Maui, Kauai, and other non-metropolitan areas, it is substantially lower at $74,680.

In addition to the above statistics, further data is available when focused specifically on surgical RNs. Specifically, RNs working in the Operating Room (OR) appear to make, on average, between $70,000 and $75,000 annually in various locations throughout Hawaii. This data is based on the salary of a general nurse in the OR. The salary of the surgical first assistant is substantially higher, at a range of $84,000 to $90,000 annually.

Ultimately, Hawaii is statistically the "second highest paying state for this profession," coming in just behind California, where the average salary of a surgical first assistant RN ranges from $83,000 to $107,000 annually. Alternatively, the salary of a surgical first assistant RN in Florida, another resort-destination, ranges from $77,000 to $85,000 annually, almost exactly the same as in Louisiana where the average salary is between $72,000 and $85,000 annually.

Despite extensive research, I was unable to locate salary data for a Surgical Nurse Manager. However, the average salary of a Nursing Supervisor in Hawaii ranges from $86,000 to $91,000 annually. This is compared to a salary of $75,000 to $86,000 in Louisiana; $88,000 to $108,000 in California; and $78,000 to $86,000 annually in Florida.

Utilizing Glassdoor, I was able to locate average salaries based on individual hospitals and other companies in Hawaii. For example, the average hourly wage of a registered nurse at Queen's Medical Center is $55.18, compared to approximately $29 to $31 an hour ar RCM Health Care Services. This website estimated an average salary of $63,070 for registered nurses in Hawaii based on 31 salaries anonymously reported by RNs throughout the state. The salary estimate for RNs in Baton Rouge, LA is identical, based on reports from 61 RNs in Baton Rouge. However, focusing on individual hourly wages reported for specific companies throughout Baton Rouge provides a substantially different outlook, with hourly pay ranging from $20 to $34 per hour at a number of hospitals and other locations.

LIVING EXPENSES
In Louisiana, the average salary of an RN ranges from $72,000 to $85,000 for a surgical first assistant. This is between 6 and 16 percent lower than the salary of a surgical first assistant in Hawaii; and 15 and 26 percent lower than in California. Based on the 36 to 50 percent cost of living increase from Louisiana to Hawaii which you mentioned in your request, this salary does not appear to make up the difference.

When considering the average salary of an RN, with no specific department in mind, the average salary in Louisiana is approximately $61,780, compared to $84,750 in Hawaii. This is a difference of approximately 37 percent, much more in line with the cost of living increase you referenced in your request.

Finally, when one compares the average salary of a Nursing Supervisor in Hawaii ($86,000 to $91,000) with one in Louisiana ($75,000 to $86,000) the percentage difference is approximately 6 to 15 percent, substantially lower than the cost of living increase from Louisiana to Hawaii.

OPEN POSITIONS
Based on a search of LinkedIn, I was unable to locate any open positions for a Surgical Nurse Manager in Hawaii or Louisiana (for both Baton Rouge specifically, and the state as a whole). In Florida, I was able to locate 14 relevant positions, and in California there were 49 relevant positions listed.

Alternatively, a search for open "surgical nursing" positions yielded substantially more results. Specifically, there are 56 open positions in Hawaii, 34 open positions in Louisiana, 617 open positions in California, and 380 open positions in Florida.

Finally, I searched for open "registered nurse" positions in the above four states and located 19,987 positions in Florida, 2,062 positions in Hawaii, 37,745 positions in California, and 3,108 positions in Louisiana.
SUMMARY
To summarize, the average salary of a registered nurse in Hawaii ranges from $67,000 to $90,000 annually. This estimate is based on a number of factors, such as specific job title (such as RN, vs Surgical First Assistant or Nursing Supervisor), location within the state, experience, and education. Alternatively, the average salary of an RN in Louisiana ranges from $61,780 to $86,000 based on those same factors.
