The requested data supplied by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) on the transportation costs incurred by different sectors of the American economy have been provided in the attached spreadsheet. The manufacturing industry has the biggest transportation cost followed by retail trade, and wholesale trade. Additional insights have been provided below.
Transportation Spend by Industry
- The total transportation spend in the utilities sector was $27.6 billion with the bulk of the cost coming from the pipeline transportation mode.
- The total transportation spend in the finance and insurance sector was $27.6 billion with the bulk of the cost coming from the for-hire air, water, and rail transportation mode.
- In-house truck transportation accounted for $35.1 billion out of the total transportation spend of $45.5 billion.
