User-Generated Street View Maps TAM
While there is no preexisting information to fully answer your question, we've used the available data to pull together key findings. Based on data for Google Maps and Google Street View, the TAM for user-generated street view maps could be anywhere from $6.7 billion to $80.4 billion.
Below you'll find an outline of our research methodology to better understand why information you've requested is publicly unavailable, as well as a deep dive into our findings.
METHODOLOGY
A search for preexisting market size data for the user-generated street view map sector proved fruitless. Therefore, we looked for revenue data for the three companies identified in our previous research, as well as any funding data for relevant startup companies. While Google's overall revenue data was available, revenue specific to Street View was not available. Both Mapillary and TripGeo are private companies, so solid revenue data is not publicly available. We consulted several sources of private company data, including Owler, Hoovers, and Find the Company, in search of revenue data.
Since revenue data was limited, we searched for the user base for each company, hoping to provide a total addressable market (TAM) in terms of users. We also looked for market share data, but this strategy did not offer useful data. Information regarding average revenue per user (ARPU) for Google was helpful in triangulating an estimated market size.
We searched for the GIS market size as well, but that information did not segment the market in terms of user-generated data.
FINDINGS
Google Street View appears to be the dominant player in this market, based on the lack of data regarding revenues or funding for other companies, so we will estimate the market size using publicly-available data related to Google Street View and Google Maps.
— Google Street View
Google's Street View app for Android has exceeded 1 billion downloads, as of June 2017, up from 500 million four years earlier. While revenue data specific to Street View is not publicly available, Google's overall average revenue per user (ARPU) was at $6.70 in the fourth quarter of 2016, according to Statista. Assuming every download represents an active user, we can estimate revenues of approximately $6.7 billion (1 billion x 6.70).
By comparison, the Google Maps app has 82 billion installations and over 1 billion active monthly users. The line between Google Maps and Google Street View is a little blurry, since "Google Street View panoramas are available in Google Maps." If every Google Maps user chose to use Google Street View, then we can estimate the market to be $6.7 billion per month.
Therefore, the TAM for user-generated street view maps could be anywhere from $6.7 billion per month and $6.7 billion per year.
That said, in 2016, analysts were predicting Google Maps, which overlaps with but differs from Street View, would generate $5 billion annually by the year 2020. The same source states that analysts believe Google Maps would generate "$1.5 billion in incremental revenue in 2017." Therefore, the aforementioned estimates may be high, but a lack of solid data related to revenues for specific products makes a more pointed estimate impossible. According to the 2016 annual report of its parent company Alphabet, Google's total 2016 revenue was $89.5 billion. Revenue data specific to products is not outlined in the annual report.
Google's dominance in the street view mapping sector, in terms of commercial use, may be enhanced with the introduction of Street View Ready, a certification standard that will integrate with 360-degree cameras.
— Mapillary
Mapillary's estimated revenue is less than $1 million, according to Owler. However, the company recently landed $8 million in Series A funding.
— TripGeo
No revenue data was available for TripGeo.
MARKET SEGMENTATION
Due to the lack of solid data for this market, segmenting the market in terms of GIS or other uses was not possible. However, the global GIS market is expected to reach $17.510 billion by 2023, though market reports do not segment the data in terms of source material, such as user-generated content. However, Google Street View is being incorporated into GIS applications.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the TAM for user-generated street view maps could be as high as between $6.7 billion and $82.4 billion if active users remain fully engaged with the technology. Google Street View is actively used in Google Maps, as well as GIS technologies, suggesting its continued market penetration. In terms of user numbers, the potential TAM is likely between 1 billion and 12 billion, based on current active users for Google Street View and Google Maps.
