We found a study by IBISWorld that disclosed the number of department stores establishments (298) in Ohio. According to the report, "department stores retail a broad range of general merchandise, such as apparel, jewelry, cosmetics, home furnishings, general household products, toys, appliances, and sporting goods, as well as discount department stores." In the other databases, the available information did not address our query directly but provided data on department stores market size, number of consumers, and the competitive landscape in the US.

The research team also employed the user-friendly, up to date mapping tool provided by Alphabet Inc. to manually count every branch of retail units in the department store category located in Ohio. We calculated approximately 263 department stores establishments in the state.

Next, by determining the average of IBISWorld's finding and that of the mapping tool, we arrived at about 281 department stores in Ohio — calculated as (298+263)/2.

Apart from Statista, Mintel, Handshake, and CNBC, the other databases are yet to research the off-price stores market in Ohio and the United States overall. The available information in Statista, Mintel, and CNBC did not address our query directly, but provided data on the leading off-price retailers in the United States.

The research team attempted to employ the user-friendly, up-to-date mapping tool provided by Alphabet Inc. to manually count every branch of retail units in the off-price store category located in Ohio. Unfortunately, we could not locate such stores with this criterion.

Off-price retailers in the US are dominated by four major chains: TJX, with about $29 billion in revenues, followed by Ross Stores, $14.85 billion, Burlington ($6.64 billion), and Nordstrom Rack ($5.16 billion). Therefore, we manually searched their website store locators for Ohio locations and discovered that TJX, Ross Stores, Burlington Coat Factory, and Nordstrom Rack have about 25, 4, 21, and 6 off-price stores locations in Ohio, respectively. • Sam's Club has about 19 club stores in the area.
  • BJ's Wholesale has around 6 club stores in Ohio.
  • There are approximately 10 Costco Wholesale Clubs in Ohio.

RESEARCH STRATEGY

To determine the number of club stores in Ohio, we researched for publicly available reports from academic sources, news sites, and industry databases like Statista, Euromonitor, IBISWorld, Mintel, and Forbes. The available information in these databases did not address our query directly, but provided data on the market size for club stores, the number of consumers, the competitive landscape in the US, as well as the revelation that club stores, which include Sam's Club, are also known as warehouse clubs.

The research team employed the user-friendly, up-to-date mapping tool provided by Alphabet Inc. to manually count every branch of retail units in the club store category located in Ohio. We calculated approximately 35 club stores establishments in the state, including Sam's Club, and BJ's Wholesale. Warehouse clubs in the US are dominated by three major chains: Sam's Club, Costco, and BJ's Wholesale Club — with a combined market share of more than 90%. However, Costco Wholesale is missing from the mapping tool's estimate of 35 club stores, making the approach undependable.

Therefore, we manually searched its website store locator for Ohio locations and discovered that there are 10 Costco Wholesale Clubs in Ohio. We also double-checked Sam's Club and BJ's Wholesale Club figures by manually searching their store locators for the same area. We found that there are 19 Sam's Clubs and 6 BJ's Wholesale Clubs in Ohio. In total, that's approximately 35 warehouse clubs establishments (10+19+6). Next, we also checked if there are any other local warehouse club stores that we failed to capture. Therefore, by refining our criteria for selecting club stores in Ohio using the Alphabet's mapping tool, we identified five extra establishments in the area — Broadway Joe's Farmers Market, Loreal USA, Boxer Express, Elite Supply Chain Solutions, and Merchant Services of America. In total, we triangulated that there are approximately 40 warehouse clubs (10+9+6+5) in the state.
