RESEARCH STRATEGY
To determine the number of department stores in Ohio, we researched for precompiled reports from academic sources, news sites, and industry databases like Statista, Euromonitor, IBISWorld, Financial Times, and CNBC. We found a study by IBISWorld that disclosed the number of department stores establishments (298) in Ohio. According to the report, "department stores retail a broad range of general merchandise, such as apparel, jewelry, cosmetics, home furnishings, general household products, toys, appliances, and sporting goods, as well as discount department stores." In the other databases, the available information did not address our query directly but provided data on department stores market size, number of consumers, and the competitive landscape in the US.
The research team also employed the user-friendly, up to date mapping tool provided by Alphabet Inc. to manually count every branch of retail units in the department store category located in Ohio. We calculated approximately 263 department stores establishments in the state.
Next, by determining the average of IBISWorld's finding and that of the mapping tool, we arrived at about 281 department stores in Ohio — calculated as (298+263)/2.
