How many software engineers are employed in Europe?
Hello! Thanks for your question about how many software engineers/developers are employed in Europe. The short version is that there are 1.6 million software engineers/developers employed in Europe. Below you will find a deep dive of my findings.
NUMBER OF SOFTWARE ENGINEERS EMPLOYED IN EUROPE
According to Stack Overflow, the world’s largest website for software developers, there are 1.6 million software developers employed in Europe in 2015. Around one million of them are located in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). According to HackerRank, a free coding practice website, seven out of the ten best countries for computer programming are from Europe: Russia (#2), Poland (#3), Switzerland (#4), Hungary (#5), France (#8), Czech Republic (#9), and Italy (#10). The largest tech hubs in Europe are London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, and Madrid. However, cities such as Lisbon and Bucharest are developing faster than the above tech hubs.
NUMBER OF SOFTWARE ENGINEERS EMPLOYED IN SELECTED TECH HUBS & CEE
According to Balderton Capital, London, United Kingdom, is the most popular destination for most developers outside of their home nation for almost every European country. There are over 300,000 developers employed in London, while there only 130,000 and 80,000 developers employed in Paris, France and Berlin, Germany respectively.
With 254,188 developers, approximately one-quarter of the number of developers in CEE are located in Poland. Majority of Polish developers (76%) are spread across Warsaw, Krakow, Wroclaw, Katowice, Poznan, and Gdansk/Gdynia. There are 74,252 in Warsaw, the capital of Poland. The next four countries in CEE with the largest populations of developers are Ukraine (165,864), Czech Republic (100,498), Hungary (79,977), and Romania (77,637).
