Smart Drug Delivery Systems

There are numerous companies involved in the development and manufacturing of smart drug delivery systems. Inhalers, injection sensors, and wearables are at the forefront of these devices. Further information can be found on the attached spreadsheet.

Select Findings

  • Merck has launched the RebiSmart device, which is targeted at patients with multiple sclerosis. This device allows for connectivity with different devices, and studies have reported adherence of over 90% in patients using it.
  • Propeller Health stands out for having established partnerships with different pharmaceuticals, designing sensors that can be used with their different inhalers.
  • Vectura Group has developed the technology behind Breelib, a Roche device. With the use of the Bree app, patients and healthcare practitioners (HCP) can track the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Research Strategy

We focused on providing information pertinent to the products provided on the spreadsheet. For some products, some information was not available. In those cases, we searched through press releases and company statements. When this failed, we search through clinical trials and other academic publications, looking for further descriptions of the product. For those in which the information was unavailable or was not applicable due to the type of device, we have added "N/A". For the second part of the request, information about companies that had not been mentioned in the prior part of the research was provided. We focused on inhalers and injections; however, when unavailable, information about other drug delivery products was provided.
