Research Strategy
We started the research with directly searching for any lists of payroll software for small businesses in the US and came across three lists that provided me with the names of top or best payroll software for small businesses in the US. Thereby, we started an exhaustive search through the companies to identify software that could be used by small business with only two employees. After a thorough search, we were able to identify only three software namely, Patriot Software, Square Payroll, and Payroll4Free that offer services to small businesses with two employees and have a monthly cost of less than $50. Thereby, we explored their website to find the other requested details.
Further, we searched for the additional details requested for the previously identified companies, which are Gusto, Intuit QuickBooks Payroll, OnPay, and Wagepoint.
Kindly note that the monthly costs associated with small businesses with only two employees were not directly available in some cases thereby, we had to triangulate the same. Below are the calculations.
Square Payroll:
The company website for Square Payroll states that they charge a subscription fee of $29/month + $5/month per person paid. Thereby, the cost for two employees would be subscription fee + 2*per person fee, which is $29 + 2*$5 = $39/month.
Gusto:
The company website for Gusto provides information on the pricing and services offered by Gusto. The web page mentions its core plan, which charges $39/month as a base fee and $6/month per person. Thereby, the monthly total for two employees would be base fee + 2*fee per person, which is $39 + 2*$6 = $51/month for two employees.
Intuit QuickBooks Payroll:
The company website for Intuit QuickBooks Payroll mentions that the company offers two packages, Self-service payroll and Full-service payroll. For the Self-service payroll package, the company charges a subscription fee of $10.50/month + $4/month per person paid. Thereby, the cost for two employees would be subscription fee + 2*per person fee, which is $10.5 + 2*$4 = $18.50/month. Similarly, for the Full-service payroll package, the company charges a subscription fee of $24/month + $4/month per person paid. Thereby, the cost for two employees would be subscription fee + 2*per person fee, which is $24 + 2*$4 = $32/month.
