Skateboarding Trends

Two trends in the global skateboarding market are electric skateboards and sustainable skateboards.

Global Skateboarding Trends

1. Electric Skateboards

  • Electric skateboards have been surging in popularity.
  • Industry source Meepo Board described 2019 as "a massive year for electric skateboarding."
  • In 2019, there have been "a ton of new eboards released from almost every major player in the eskate industry, new brands popping up, a lot of innovation, electric skateboard events and competitions and a massive influx of new riders."
  • A sub-trend within the electric-skateboard space is for manufacturers to make electric skateboards "as lightweight as possible."
  • The convenience of riding an electric skateboard is a factor driving its popularity, as it's motorized. Electric skateboards are mainly operated by a handheld throttle (to manage how fast it goes) and controls that monitor weight.
  • A subset within the electric skateboard trend is boardless skateboards, which are motorized and riders stand in the circular wheels since there is no actual deck to stand on.
  • Electric skateboards are a trend in the global skateboarding market, as they were described as such by recent reports/articles from Grandview Research, Meepo Boards, and eRideHero.
  • Inboard Technology is a company that is manifesting the electric skateboard trend. In fact, the source Digital Trends called the company's M1 model the best electric skateboard for 2019.
  • Boosted is a company that's manifesting the electric skateboard trend. According to Digital Trends, the company "makes some of the best electric longboards."

2. Sustainable Skateboards

Research Strategy

We began our research by reviewing numerous articles and reports about trends within the global skateboarding market. In so doing, we consulted a number of sources which ranged from market research reports from sources such as Grandview Research to articles from industry sources such as eRideHero and media sources such as Forbes. From those sources, electric skateboards and sustainability were the two trends we identified from the information we reviewed. We ensured that each trend we included above is indeed a trend by finding each described as such by two or more reputable sources. The two trends we provided are current trends in 2019.
