What is the size of the US Veteran workforce in the greater DC area?
Hello! Thanks for your question about the size of the US Veteran workforce in the greater DC area. The short version is that there are 1,424,000 US veterans in the Greater DC area, out of whom 839,000 are in the workforce. Out of the veterans in the workforce, 808,000 are currently employed and 31,000 are unemployed and looking for employment. Below you will find a deep dive of my findings.
In March 2017, the US Bureau of Labour published a news release on the employment status of veterans who are 18 years and over. The data was categorized by state. According to the published data, veterans are men and women who served in the US Armed Forces on active duty but were not on active duty at the time of the survey. The published data included:
1. The total number of veterans per state (civilian noninstitutional population),
2. The number of veterans who are currently employed,
3. The number of veterans who are currently unemployed (actively looking for job),
4. The number of veterans who are not part of the labor force.
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the civilian noninstitutional population is defined as the US population of individuals who are 16 years and above, do not reside in institutions like correctional facilities and are not on active duty in the Armed Forces.
