Seafood Distributors - Leader List

We have provided a list of the top four seafood distributors based on revenue in the United States. The names of distributors, company's website, revenue, and headquarters locations are on the attached spreadsheet rows 3-6, column A-D.

METHODOLOGY

We scoured through reputable industry publications for top seafood distributors and found two lists that provided the top North American seafood distributors. These lists also provided annual revenue for the year 2017, and the headquartered locations. We attempted to access the year 2018 annual revenues; however, some companies had not made the year 2018 available on their website. We felt the industry report with the revenues would be the most consistent way to establish revenue instead of using estimates.

Our research team also searched Hoovers, Craft, Zoom, and IBISWorld for the year 2018 revenues, unfortunately, we were unable to find the year 2018 revenues on any of the databases, thus making the 2017 revenues provided in the industry report the most reliable and consistent.

We cross-referenced the two lists and eliminated any company whose headquarters are not in the United States. After removing the companies that did not meet the requirements, we used the top four companies based on revenue, and headquarters in the United States for this request as shown in our findings below.

Seafood Distributors - Leader List Details

As indicated in the spreadsheet, Thai Union was established in 1977, and some of its customers include Ralph’s, Wal-Mart and Target. Tri Marine International was founded in 1972 and specifically deals with Tuna. Maruha Nichiro Corp has been operational for over 130 years and serves supermarkets, restaurants, and mom-and-pop stores. Finally, Bumble Bee Seafoods was founded in 1899, and it produces and supplies canned seafood products that it sells to specific customers such as Lowes Foods, Target, and Wal-Mart. However, we could not find information on specific customers for Maruha Nichiro and Tri Marine International. Below is a methodology that we used in an attempt to get this information.

METHODOLOGY

Our first strategy was to check the official websites of both Tri Marine International and Maruha Nichiro. However, we could only establish a general overview of the type of customers that they serve such as supermarkets and retailers. The second strategy was to check for reports in databases such as CrunchBase, Bloomberg, and Reuters. Based on this approach we found information relating to their revenue, acquisitions and respective history. However, these resources did not contain information on the companies’ specific customers.

We then shifted our focus to articles relating to operations of the two companies. Examples include ‘Tri Marine to sell California wet fish plant to Silver Bay’ and ‘Maruha’s investment in Spanish seafood supplier was no rescue.’ While such articles provided a detailed overview of the operations of these companies, they did not have details on their specific customers. The final strategy was to check for any supermarkets or grocery stores that sell the companies’ products. However, we did not find any products or brands on sale from these companies at any store.
