How many SaaS companies have revenues between $50 million to $1 Billion?
Hello and thank you for using Wonder! I understand that you are looking for the number of SaaS companies that have revenues between $50 million and $1 billion. In short, I estimated that there are over 14 000 SaaS companies from which roughly 400 are companies with revenue between $50 million and $1 billion. I also built a spreadsheet including examples of private companies with revenues between $50 million and $1 billion using information from a PwC report from 2014, the Inc 5000 US and Europe Databases, and the BVP cloud computing database. A single Wonder list comprises 10 items, and if you need more entries, you can submit a new request and we'll pick up where we left off. As such, I have included information on 10 private SaaS companies.
METHODOLOGY AND FINDINGS
In order to estimate the total number of SaaS companies, I started searching for articles from renowned business websites such as Garner, Forbes, and Fortune. However, I wasn't able to find anything pointing out to the exact number of SaaS companies in the world. As such, I used the advanced search in LinkedIn and AngelList in order to estimate the number of SaaS companies worldwide. Using the keyword "SaaS OR Software-as-a-service", I was able to estimate that there are more than 14 000 SaaS companies globally. LinkedIn reported 16514 registered SaaS companies and AngelList reported 13697 registered SaaS companies. That being said, since it isn't guaranteed that all of the SaaS companies are registered on LinkedIn or AngelList or that all of the companies information has been updated, the number presented above is only an estimation.
Next, I estimated the number of SaaS companies that have a revenue between $50 million and $1 billion. For that, I relied on Gartner's definition of a midsize business . They state that a midsize company is usually defined as having 100-999 employees and a revenue between $50 million and $1 billion. Unfortunately, LinkedIn doesn't give the option to select companies with 100 to a 1000 employees. It only gives you the option to select companies with 50 to 200, 200 to 500, and 500 to 1000 employees. Therefore I selected all of the companies on LinkedIn that had between 200 and 999 employees. The total number was 384 companies. In order to confirm that, I chose 5 companies, that had between 200 and 1000 employees, at random. All five had recorded a revenue over $50 Million. My last step was to find 10 SaaS companies with revenues between $50 million to $1 billion. In order to compile a list of 10 private SaaS companies I found a list of the top 100 SaaS companies by revenue published by PwC, which I used as a baseline for my research. However, since the report was from 2014, I cross-referenced my findings using the Inc 5000 US and Europe lists, as well as the BVP cloud computing companies database in order to verify and update the list of companies to include on the spreadsheet. I chose to include 5 companies that had a reported revenue above $500 million and 5 fast-rising companies that had a revenue between $50 million and $200 million. Down below, you will find the websites of the 10 companies I chose.
CONCLUSION
In brief, using the advanced search on LinkedIn and Angel, I was able to estimate that the total number of SaaS companies surpasses 14 000. Out of those companies, I was able to estimate that the total number of SaaS companies, with revenues between $50 million and $1 billion, was roughly 400. I also provided you with 10 SaaS companies that had a revenue between $50 million and $1 billion in the provided spreadsheet.
