To identify the job qualifications and responsibilities for the listed positions at Google, we began our search by looking through Google LLC’s official job postings. Through this channel, we were able to obtain the job qualifications and responsibilities for the positions of associate product manager, product manager, senior product manager, principal product manager, group product manager, and director of product management. However, there was no information found for the positions of senior director of product management and VP of product management.
We then extended our search to include Google’s corporate website, professional network websites such as LinkedIn, company profiler websites such as Bloomberg, and review websites such as Glassdoor. We were able to list the qualifications and responsibilities for the VP of product management at Google from the LinkedIn profile page of the current VP of product management of Google. It was observed that the current senior director of Google was an internal candidate and, thus, can be safely assumed that the job listing for this position is not externally advertised by Google. Based on this assumption, we found the current senior director’s profile page on LinkedIn and identified his present and past responsibilities as director of product management and senior director of product management. We used the job qualifications for a director of product management as a proxy to list the minimum qualifications for a senior director of product management.

#1: Associate Product Manager

Job Qualifications:

  • Must have ample experience in software development with a strong focus on coding. It is essential that the candidate has experience in coding of various programming languages such as C, C++, JavaScript, Java, and Python.
  • The candidate should have an internship experience or relevant experience as a research assistant or teaching assistants in a technical field.
  • The candidate must be able to adapt quickly and demonstrate the ability to master new concepts. He/she must have an interest in analyzing and creating new products. It is required for the candidate to also have analytical, organizational, problem-solving, written, verbal, interpersonal, presentation, and communication skills.

Responsibilities:

  • An associate product manager will have to collaborate with engineers to create, build, and launch innovative features for the company’s products.

We then had to research the definition of the role for "VP Product Management" according to "The Product Manager Career Path". We found out that the VP of product management is significantly less involved with the hands-on development of the product. The VP of product management responsible for the entire product set and how it fits into the rest of the organization. This means that the VP can be an executive in the product management ladder. We then found an executive level of product managers in Amazon called "Head of Product Management "instead of VP of product management". He or she is also responsible for the management of multiple product management teams and product lines. They also help in defining the strategy of the company and representing the company externally. We therefore concluded that the VP of product management is a role played by the Head of Product Management whose qualifications and responsibilities we have outlined below.

LinkedIn requires a minimum qualification or degree of B.A./B.S. for all the positions from Associate Product Manager to the Director of Product Management. No experience is required for Associate Product Manager whereas, an experience of more than 10 years is required for Director of Product Management.

Although a thorough search through publicly available sources could not provide a few of the required information which includes the job qualifications and responsibilities for the position of Senior Director of Product Management and VP of Product Management. However, we were able to provide helpful insights based on the LinkedIn profiles of some of the individuals who are positioned as Senior Director of Product Management and VP of Product Management at LinkedIn. Below is the deep dive in our methodology and findings.

METHODOLOGY

Through our research, we found all the required information except a few. We were unable to identify the job qualifications and responsibilities for the position of Senior Director of Product Management and VP of Product Management. Below are the strategies we adopted while searching for the data.
Initially, we explored the official website of LinkedIn and found many vacancies at LinkedIn related to the job criteria, from Associate Product Manager to Director of Product Management. Unfortunately, no results were found associated with the Senior Director of Product Management and VP of Product Management.
Next, we attempted to broaden the research criteria by locating the information of Senior Director of Product Management. We found the latest updates from the American Marketing Association in which LinkedIn opened the job vacancy for the VP of Product Management at LinkedIn. The job posted a day ago and didn't include any information about the qualification necessary for this position. It only displayed the non-entry-level position and some responsibilities.
Later, we tried to find another data point associated with Senior Director and Vice President of Product Management at LinkedIn such as the event they've attended or presented. During our research, we came across a few links from Glassdoor, Product Management Festival, and others and those links reported interviews or highlighted an article about Senior Product Management positions at LinkedIn. However, none of them included the details about job qualifications or responsibilities of the Senior Director of Product Management or VP of Product Management at LinkedIn.
Based on our research, we have collected the information on persons in charge of Senior Director and VP of Product Management positions at LinkedIn such as Henry Li (Senior Director of Product Management) and John Jersin (VP of Product Management) at LinkedIn. We navigated through their LinkedIn profiles and they disclosed some description about their achievements and responsibilities on the position they've held.
Our research through the above-mentioned strategies did not provide any information on the job qualifications for Senior Director of Product Management at LinkedIn. So, we included that information which we found on job responsibilities from LinkedIn pages for existing VPs and Senior Directors of Product Management as a proxy. Additionally, we included the job qualification from the AMA website as a proxy for the job qualifications for the VP of Product Management at LinkedIn.
