What resources are people currently using to learn about home gardening?
Hello and thank you for asking Wonder! I understand that you are seeking resources that people use when they are trying to learn about gardening at home. In short, major resources that are being used to learn more about home gardening are websites, books, and classes. There has been an increase in the number of classes that gardening centers offer, but books do not appear to be as popular as they once were.
WEBSITES
There are a number of very popular websites that people go to when they are wanting to learn about gardening. According to statistics from Alexa, specifically for "FAQs, Help, and Tutorials" in the gardening category, the top sites by traffic are:
All of these sites have a number of different resources for people to use if they are wanting to learn how to garden. This includes things like tutorials, how-to guides, videos, advice, and more.
These are not the only kinds of websites that are popular when it comes to resources for learning about home gardening. People will also turn to other gardeners to learn from. A very popular forum for gardeners is offered by Houzz. They have over 100 discussion categories that are related to gardening and over 1.5 million discussions.
BOOKS
In 2006, almost half of surveyed people said that they preferred books to learn about gardening. While there is not a more updated survey on this exact topic, recent book sales indicate that this is no longer the case, though they are still a resource that is used. Amazon lists their best sellers in a number of categories, including reference books in the gardening section. The best sellers are showing a trend towards very specific areas of gardening, rather than learning in a more general sense. In the top 10, there are 3 books about growing marijuana, 1 about gardening to make alcohol, and 1 that is only a calendar. The other 5 are:
CLASSES
In recent years, gardening centers have been increasing the number and type of classes that they offer to their customers. Some have commented that they have found that their overall customer base has grown with the addition of these classes. The promotion of these classes is usually done through the use of social media, to connect with the more tech-savvy demographics.
Not only are gardening centers offering courses, but universities are, as well. Some of the top university courses that are offered online include Organic Gardening from Cornell University and Master Gardener from Oregon State University. Aside from universities, there is also a virtual gardening school.
OTHERS
There are a few other resources where people go to learn about gardening, though they are used less frequently. There are volunteer opportunities for gardening. While these will not be focused on home gardening, it is still an educational resource that people can then use at home. Also, there are apps that are specific to gardening, but 64% of Millennials do not use any kind of technology when it comes to gardening. However, people are becoming more interested in using apps for gardening, with 30% of survey participants reporting this.
------
Overall, there are a number of resources that people use to learn about gardening. Main options used include gardening websites, books, and classes, both formal and informal.
