Remanufactured Items (2)

Key Takeaways

  • Two companies specializing in small electrical equipment remanufacturing are Telesource and Cisco.

Introduction

The research identified a total of 11 categories of products (nine physically small item categories and two medium product categories) that can be remanufactured, including examples of the type of items within each category that can be remanufactured, examples of companies based in the US that provide remanufacturing services in each category, and the website of each company, as well as whether each company is a third-party remanufacturer or it remanufactures its products.

Kindly note that information regarding physically small items that can be remanufactured is limited in the public domain. Specifically, we were only able to identify eight (8) physically small item categories that can be remanufactured. Additionally, some companies we found that remanufactured items in these product categories failed to mention the exact items within the categories they remanufacture.

Hence, we expanded the research scope to include two medium item categories as part of our helpful findings.

A detailed research strategy can be found at the end of this research, under the section “Research Strategy,” explaining why some information you've requested is publicly unavailable, as well as a deep dive into our findings.

Research Strategy

For this research on Remanufactured Items, we began by finding a pre-compiled list of small products/product categories that can be remanufactured. This strategy proved futile, as we were unable to find any pre-compiled list of physically small items that can be remanufactured. Most pre-compiled lists of items that can be remanufactured that are available in the public domain, such as nibusinessinfo.co.uk, are focused on large machinery and equipment. Additionally, most physically small items either fell under the electrical or electronic product categories, making it difficult to list these items under an independent product category. For example, most electrical components (irrespective of what device they can be found in) can only be categorized under the electrical component category. Similarly, all components of household products such as ACs, refrigerators, and floor cleaners, among other household items, still fall under the electrical or electronic category. This has limited the possibility of classifying these items under different product categories, as this would simply mean that the examples of companies we will provide will be from one sector.

To provide the required information, we focused on identifying different product categories made up of small components and then went ahead to find companies that remanufacture these components. For instance, Recommerce Group provided a list of products (image below) it remanufactures. From such a list, we now began finding other companies that remanufacture such products.

Another strategy we employed was to find companies that identified themselves as remanufacturing companies, and then list the examples of items that the company has noted that it remanufactures on its website. For example, Cisco identified itself as a remanufacturer of IT parts, such as routers, switches, and transceiver modules, among other networking equipment. With this information in mind, we identified a second company that remanufactures IT components, while listing Cisco's IT components as examples of IT components that can be remanufactured.

Additionally, some of the companies identified, such as Recommerce Group and Encore, did not mention the exact items within each product category that they remanufacture. For instance, Recommerce Group noted that it has proprietary remanufacturing processes, featuring electro-mechanical, mechanical, cosmetic, and air conditioning and refrigeration (ACR) procedures to remanufacture consumer products such as household appliances, kitchen appliances, and floor care products, among others. Likewise, Encore pointed out that it is a customized remanufacturer that uses OEM parts to work on Apple and Samsung mobile phones, tablets, and MacBooks. Just like some other companies found, both companies failed to mention the exact products/items/components they remanufacture within these categories.

To find examples of the items that these companies remanufacture, we began by scouring the website of each company, including the product/services pages, solutions offered, and their technology, to note if the company has provided such examples. While we found this information for some companies, others, such as Recommerce Group, Micronix, Telesource, TSS Microscopy, and Encore, failed to provide such examples on their website. We were only able to find the products that they remanufacture and not the individual components within these products. For instance, Micronix pointed out that it remanufactured new microscopes & microscopy equipment, similar to TSS Microscopy. However, none of them mentioned the items within the products that they remanufacture. We then scoured through the press releases by these companies and their product catalog pages, all to no avail.

Next, we searched through the profile of each of these companies across industry-specific databases such as Datanyze (for IT companies) and Thomas.net (for electrical/electronics companies) and general third-party profiling databases such as ZoomInfo, Traxcn, and Crunchbase. Through this strategy, we hoped to find any information on the list of items that these companies remanufacture within the product categories they have already identified, all to no avail.
