Research Strategy

For this research on the real cost of a college degree, we leveraged the most reputable sources of information available in the public domain, including Education Data Org, Best Colleges, National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, Coursera, and National Center for Education Statistics. Also, using these sources, we were able to calculate the estimates of the total tuition cost and the total of each additional hidden cost needed to complete a bachelor's degree for four years.

The calculations were presented in relevant sections. To perform them, we made an assumption that each student takes approximately the required four years to complete a bachelor's degree. Therefore, for each, the annual cost (e.g., of tuition, rooms, board, or textbooks) was multiplied by four to arrive at the total cost needed to graduate.
