Ratings of Medicare Advantage Plans: US Counties

Although the research team could not provide a breakdown of the percentage of counties in the U.S. that have 4.5 and 5-star medicare advantage plans available, the team was able to determine that about 25% of U.S. states have 5-star medicare advantage plans available, 49% of U.S. states have 4.5-star medicare advantage plans available, while about 37% have less than 4.5-star medicare advantage plans available.

States With 5-Star Medicare Advantage Plans Available

Illinois
Iowa
Texas
Virginia
  • This gives a total of 13 states out of 51 states (including the District of Columbia).
  • Therefore, (13/51)*100 = 25% of U.S. states have at least a 5-star medicare advantage plan available.

States With 4.5-Star Medicare Advantage Plans Available

Alabama
Florida
Idaho
Kansas
Maine
Michigan
Missouri
New York
Ohio
Oregon
Texas
Utah
Virginia
  • This gives a total of 25 states out of 51 states (including the District of Columbia).
  • Therefore, (25/51)*100 = 49% of U.S. states have at least a 4.5-star medicare advantage plan available.
  • This implies that 19 states in the U.S. that are not listed above have less than 4.5-star medicare advantage plan available, this is about 37% [(19/51)*100].

Research Strategy

To provide a breakdown of the percentage of counties in the U.S. that have 4.5/5-star medicare advantage plans available, the team commenced with a thorough search through government sources and third-party publications. We hoped to find pre-compiled data from sources such as the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services but we could only find information on the enrollment rating and penetration rating of medicare advantage plans in U.S. counties.

Additionally, triangulation was ultimately not possible due to the unavailability of relevant data on ratings by county in the U.S. In the course of this research, we found a database by USNews that provides a breakdown of medicare advantage plan providers in all 50 states in the U.S. including the Discrete of Columbia based on the available ratings for 2019. This source provided a list of counties served by each provider, but to collate a list of all counties that have 4.5 and 5-star ratings is outside the scope of this project's parameters.
