The research's results are in the client spreadsheet. Note that Illinois allows recreational marijuana use as of January 1, 2020. As a result, all but one company (New Age Care) now addresses this market.

Research Strategy

All the companies are private, and financial information is unavailable for all of them. We ran a number of searches including looking at the companies social media platforms and a variety of resources for financial data of private companies. Most company websites do not identify individuals or total number of employees. LinkedIn was a useful tool to find some information on company size and individuals. All Companies provide a contact form on their website. When an actual email address is provided, it is filled into the spreadsheet. In addition, when people working for the company have LinkedIn pages, we provided the identity of the seemingly highest placed individual, that person's title and their LinkedIn contact information.

Competitor Evaluation (3)

Bob Alten is the president and CEO of Alten Construction. The company's recently reported revenue is $75 million. The requested information is provided in the attached spreadsheet. Below is a brief overview of our findings.

  • Focus is a development and construction company that is located in Chicago, Illinois. The company to date has constructed and developed properties that are collectively worth about $1.8 billion in the Chicago market.
  • The company generates an estimated annual revenue of $5.6 million.
  • Knoebel Construction is a privately owned construction company that is located in St. Louis. The company offers services in general contracting, design/build, pre-construction, and post-construction services.
  • The company is owned by Matthew Mabie.

Research Strategy

All information for all companies was straightforward except for revenue. For companies whose revenue figures could not be identified on the company website or from their press release, we relied on figures from reliable databases such as Hoovers, Manta, Zoominfo, and others.

The twenty competitors of Hannah Bretzel that have been identified for this analysis all operate in the same segment as Hannah Bretzel i.e. food and beverage, more specifically in sandwiches. The details of all these companies have been documented in Rows 3-22 of the attached spreadsheet under the tab titled "Hannah's Bretzel." These companies are listed below:

Research Strategy

Since all the above companies are small and privately owned, they do not have detailed websites that list the name and contact information of the owner or the higher management, annual revenue, and number of employees working for them. For the annual revenue figure, since no data was mentioned in either the company website or their press release, we relied on the figures from reliable databases like Zoominfo, Crunchbase, Hoovers, and others. However, for Sprout Sandwich Company, which is located in Hawaii, even this data could not be found after extensive research. For the name of the owner or their higher management, we got the information from LinkedIn, except for Naked Lunch and Best Baguette, which are not available anywhere. For their email addresses, since these are not listed in public forums like LinkedIn, we had to open trial memberships to email finding websites like Hunter.io, Rocketreach. However, since trial membership is restricted to only 4 searches, we could only get the email addresses of 8 competitors. Also, since a website like apollo.io only accepts company email addresses for trial memberships, such an email address could not be provided. For the number of employees, we relied on databases like LinkedIn, Zoominfo, Hoovers, wherever these were not available. We have entered N/A for those entries where the information could not be found.

We identified 20 competitors to BIG Construction based on comparable revenue (further detailed in the Research Strategy section below). Those 20 competitors are listed in the attached spreadsheet. We also listed those competitors below, along with their annual revenues.

  • Kadean Construction generates approximately $75 million in annual revenue.
  • A.D. Morgan Corporation's annual revenue totals around $75 million.
  • Golden Triangle Construction has between $50-100 million in annual revenue. Another source pegged the company's revenue at $81.5 million.
  • Del Amo Construction has between $50-100 million in annual revenue. Another source pegged the company's revenue at $73.2 million.
  • Knoebel Construction generates $80 million in annual revenue.
  • Brackett Builders' annual revenue amounts to $80 million.

Research Strategy

Annual revenue was the metric we used to identify comparably sized competitors to BIG Construction. Thus, our first step involved finding BIG Construction's annual revenue ($70 million), which was provided on its website. Next, we identified what exactly BIG Construction does and, from doing so, we identified that it's a "general contractor and construction management firm" that works on commercial properties. Thus, we ensured that the competitors we identified do that type of work. We specifically excluded residential-only contractors/construction management firms because BIG Construction is involved in the commercial side of the construction sector. To identify the competitors, we conducted numerous, broad searches for general contractors/construction management firms with annual revenue comparable to that of BIG Construction's $70 million. All the competitors we identified had annual revenues in the range of $60 million to $92.9 million. Lastly, all the competitors we provided are U.S.-based companies.

Company Identification (1)

Twenty competitors of Hannah’s Bretzel have been determined based on the sector of operation and comparable revenue. The identified sandwich companies have been documented in the attached spreadsheet under the tab titled “Hannah’s Bretzel”.

  • Cochon Butcher is recognized to have New Orleans’ best sandwich menu. The company generates an estimated annual revenue of $13.5 million.
  • Bunk Bar is considered to be one of the best sandwich shops in Portland. Bunk generates an estimated annual revenue of $3.2 million.
  • Other award-winning sandwich shops that have earned recognition as some of the best sandwich makers in the United States and use fresh, locally sourced ingredients are Honey Hole Sandwiches and Sprout Sandwich Shop.

Research Strategy

We began our search by looking into industry-specific reports, market research reports, food blogs, and media reports for pre-compiled lists on the best organic sandwich makers in the United States. After an extensive search through these channels, we found several lists of the most creative and the best sandwich companies in America such as Thrillist’s "19 Incredible Sandwich Chains the Entire Country Needs" and Love Food’s "The best sandwich shop in every US State". We then individually researched each company on these lists to identify those that operate in the same market space as Hannah’s Bretzel and have a comparable revenue. According to Zoominfo, Hannah’s Bretzel generates an estimated annual revenue of $8.1 million, therefore, the competitors identified have revenues ranging between $1 million to $18 million. We were able to find the revenue of most companies through profiler websites such as Hoovers, Zoominfo, and Owler. However, we were not able to find the revenue for two competitors — Honey Hole Sandwiches and Sprout Sandwich Shop. Both these companies are found to be award-winning sandwich shops that use fresh and locally-sourced ingredients.

All information for all companies was straightforward except for revenue. As the companies are private, there are no actual revenue figures available. For Hannah's Bretzel and GREC Architects, we were able to find estimates using reliable databases such as Owler, Hoovers, Manta, and others. However, neither BIG Construction nor MOCA had entries in these databases. Therefore, we entered "N/A" in column G for both BIG Construction and MOCA.
