How can I make a private internal homepage for my team?
Hello! Thanks for your question about the best ways to implement a private internal homepage. The short version is that there are two main ways this can be achieved, one is to subscribe to a portal software package and the other is to create a regular website and adapt it to your organization's needs. Below you will find a deep dive of my findings.
METHODOLOGY
Looking for best ways for creating a private homepage, I first came across commercial collaboration tools with advanced features and capabilities. Considering that such portals may not be suitable for small businesses, I dug a little deeper to find alternative solutions. I focused on reducing cost and maximizing simplicity, while making sure the proposed solutions satisfy the needs.
I came to conclusion that creating a password-protected webpage can be an effective, simple and cheap solution. To be thorough, I also looked into the portal solution and discussed the advantages of it over having a simple password-protected webpage. Finally, under each category I included the top service providers with links to their websites.
PASSWORD PROTECTED WEBPAGE
This is the simplest way to achieve the goal. In this case a website builder tool is used to create a webpage using a friendly user interface (mostly drag and drop). Then using the website builder tool, the page can be secured by a single password. All team members can then access the webpage using the predefined password.
Additionally, access to the website builder tool can be given to individuals in order to enable them to make modifications to the page. The webpage can be accessed from any computer with an internet connection. Some of the website building tools that offer this feature are Weebly and Wix.
COLLABORATION SOFTWARE
This is a more long-term solution, which involves subscribing to monthly services such as, SharePoint, Jostle or Jive. Such services generally have better security, but they are more costly. They are designed for medium to large businesses and they allow collaboration in the form of file sharing, chatting and email across multiple platforms. While this may not be a suitable solution for a company of four, there are portal tools that are designed for smaller businesses. For instance, MyHub is a cloud based intranet provider, which allows users to create secure pages and share files, starting at $99 a month with the option of trying the service for free for 14 days.
CONCLUSION
To wrap it up, the simplest way to create a private internal homepage would be to use website builders that allows you to easily create webpages with the capability of adding a strong password. This allows every member of the team to access the website through the internet and modify it as needed. The alternative would be to subscribe to a portal tool with the potential for expansion in the future.
