Predictions from Futurists - General Predictions

Top general predictions that futurists are giving for the year 2035 relate to Africa's workforce, energy, population, urbanization, global GDP, the largest global cities, and economic superpowers.

AFRICA WORKFORCE

ENERGY

  • On future energy mix, BP Energy Outlook notes that "Oil and gas, together with coal, will remain the main source of energy powering the world economy, accounting for more than 75% of total energy supply in 2035, compared with 86% in 2015."
  • BP is the fifth-largest oil major with revenues of $303 billion in 2018. BP Energy Outlook provides insight into the forces shaping the global energy transition out to 2040.

POPULATION

  • On population growth and aging population, the Development Research Center of the State Council notes that "The global population is predicted to rise from 7.35 billion in 2015 to 8.89 billion in 2035 and 9.77 billion in 2050. The proportion of the aging population is expected to rise from 8.3 percent in 2015 to 13 percent in 2035 and 15.8 percent in 2050."
  • Development Research Center (DRC) of the State Council is a Chinese state-owned think tank that provides policy research, strategic review and consulting on economic and social matters relating to China.

URBANIZATION

  • On urbanization, the Development Research Center of the State Council notes that "The global urbanization rate is expected to be 61.7 percent by 2035, becoming a key driver for future growth."

LARGEST GLOBAL CITIES

GLOBAL GDP

ECONOMIC SUPER POWER

  • According to the Development Research Center of the State Council, "the US economy will remain dominant until 2035" (when China becomes the dominant economic superpower). "The European Union and Japan will become weaker ... with Japan dropping from the third to the fifth-largest economy by 2035, and Germany becoming the only European nation in the top seven."

RESEARCH STRATEGY

In order to determine general predictions that futurists are giving for the year 2035, we engaged in a detailed review across news source including SMCP and Daily Sun. Importantly, we sought to identify predictions that did not include healthcare or technology to avoid research overlap. In presenting your research insights, your research team provided both the full statement and the think tank providing the statement. Critically, we sought to group research insights into seven groups rater than just providing general insights in order to provide more depth to the research.

Predictions from Futurists - Technology, Health, and Healthcare

Twelve of the predictions that futurists are giving for the year 2035 surrounding technology, health, and healthcare are: brain powered bionic movement through nanotechnology, nanotechnology used in the blood stream for medical treatment, telepathy through nanotechnology, the use of AI to assist businesses, in-vitro meat production, quantum computing, the full eradication of malaria, sport broadcasters using holograms, remote digital health care, and the use of augmented reality devices.

Technology - Health

Health/Healthcare - Non-Tech

Technology - Non-Medical

Research Strategy:

While there were some cases of specific mentions of futurists and their predictions for 2035, your research team was able to find more information by searching for 2030 – 2040. Most of the data about technology in 2035 did focus on health. There were some mentions of space travel, air travel, and train travel but the information was either not consistent or the data ranges varied too much so they were not included.

The above options were chosen because of either their repetitive mentioning or their importance. For example, we included malaria eradication and the deficit in nurses because they would both have profound meaning to the health system as a whole. Another example is the use of nanotechnology which was consistently mentioned. Its uses varied widely, making up for at least four of the predictions listed.

The information about augmented reality device states 2030 but we felt it was relevant enough to be mentioned due to its possible importance in everyday life.

Quotes
  • "And by the early 2030s, BCI will become advanced enough to allow people with spinal injuries to walk again by relaying their walking thought commands to their lower torso through a spinal implant."
  • "In the context of health, nanotech is being investigated as a tool that could revolutionize healthcare by replacing drugs and most surgeries entirely by the late 2030s."
Quotes
  • "By 2035, humans will communicate with one another telepathically with the help of computers."
Quotes
  • "The next major food revolution will be vertical agriculture in which we grow food in AI-controlled vertical buildings rather than horizontal land: hydroponic plants for fruits and vegetables and in-vitro cloned meat."
Quotes
  • "Electronics companies are already planning broadcasts using live holograms."
  • "And by 2035 we will be talking about the coming of quantum computing, which will take us beyond the world of binary, digital computing, on and off, black and white, 0s and 1s."
  • "We will eradicate malaria, I believe, to the point where there are no human cases reported globally in 2035."
  • "We'll be able to plug information streams directly into the cortex"
Quotes
  • "The aforementioned technologies will shape how we monitor and diagnose patients. I see the potential to synthesise a nanotech monitor into a ‘smart pill’ aerosol providing data assessing the compliance of a patient’s use of their topical steroid."
Quotes
  • "We will no longer stare at flat displays, but rather, use AR glasses, helmets, and user-aware holographic spaces instead."
