Power 5 Collegiate eSports Strategy and Structure


A new organization, called the National Association of Collegiate eSports, has been formed to govern the sport. University of Utah has an eSports program reporting to an academic department, the Marquette team is managed by the Athletics Department and the University of Missouri team is under the guidance of the Department of Student Affairs.

The University has four teams, one for each of the following games:

MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY — Big East Conference

OVERVIEW OF MARQUETTE eSPORTS
  • Marquette has had an eSports club since 2015.
  • About 40 students, mainly students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, were members of the club team, which represented Marquette at eSports tournaments.
  • Marquette University launched its varsity eSports team in the Fall of 2019. It is the first in the country in a Division I college.
ORGANIZATION
  • The athletics program at Marquette is responsible for the Golden Eagles eSports team.
  • It is being run like any other varsity sport: there were tryouts, a coach was hired, regular practices take place, and the team will represent Marquette at eSports tournament.
  • The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is managing the team, in close collaboration with the Division of Student Affairs, the Office of Admissions and the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences.
  • Marquette is committed to the creation of a cross-disciplinary program in eSports, which will integrate academics and research.
GOVERNANCE
  • The National Association of Collegiate eSports (NACE) is the governance body for intercollegiate eSports.

The University of Missouri — (Southeastern Conference)

OVERVIEW OF UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI eSPORTS
ORGANIZATION
  • The university is promoting the following academic options for team members: Online broadcasting/Streaming. Video production, Sports journalism, Documentary journalism, Social Media, Marketing/Branding, Data Analysis, and Computer Science.
GOVERNANCE
  • The National Association of Collegiate eSports (NACE) is the governance body for intercollegiate eSports.
TEAMS AND GAMES
  • The university is currently supporting three teams in the games of Overwatch, Rocket League, and League of Legends.
