Most Popular PC Games: Turkey

After conducting extensive research, we could not provide a list of the top five PC games in Turkey as of 2019 because the information is not publicly available. However, we found that the top five PC games in Turkey as of 2017 include League of Legends, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, GTA San Andreas & GTA 5, Wolf Team, and Minecraft.

TOP FIVE PC GAMES IN TURKEY AS OF 2017

1. LEAGUE OF LEGENDS

2. COUNTER-STRIKE: GLOBAL OFFENSIVE

3. GTA SAN ANDREAS & GTA 5

4. WOLF TEAM

5. MINECRAFT

RESEARCH STRATEGY

We began by searching for various local news sources and industry-specific publications such as tech magazines and gaming magazines which might have articles with a list of the top five best-selling and most-played PC games in Turkey. The sites consulted include Haberler.com, PCNet, and Hürriyet. Using this strategy, we found a list of the top five PC games by the number of players — however, the most recent list dated back to 2017.

To find a more recent list, we searched for 2019 PC games market reports in Turkey. We hoped to find segmentation charts of games that contributed the most to the revenue of the computer games market in Turkey, which we would then use as a proxy to determine the best-selling or most played games in the country. However, the most recent relevant report dates back to 2016. Though a few 2019 PC games market reports exist, they mostly focus on the global market, with a brief focus (not relevant to the request) on Turkey.

As a last resort, we checked for awards given to best-selling computer games in Turkey, to find out which games have received the awards in 2019 and determine the top five best-selling games in the country as of 2019. To find this information, we searched for Turkish game awards, and The Game Awards' website to see if they offer awards to best-selling games in Turkey. However, we found that no awards exist in Turkey for best-selling games.
The available awards focus on funding new and innovative games that have just entered the market. Also, we found that "The Game Awards" does not award best-selling games in Turkey, although best-selling PC games are awarded on a global level and in some countries like the UK occasionally.

Most Popular PC Games: Russia

Although information specific to the top PC games in Russia in 2019 was unavailable, we managed to use the available information to provide relevant information on the top PC games in Russia in 2018. The most popular PC games in Moscow in 2018 were Fortnight, War Thunder, PUBG, Respawnables, and League of Legends. Fortnight was also the second best-selling PC game in the period.

USEFUL FINDINGS

  • According to data from a study conducted by MGTS, the most popular computer games in Moscow in 2018, based on the total gaming traffic, were Fortnight, War Thunder, PUBG, Respawnables, and League of Legends.
  • According to data derived from NewZoo, free-to-play computer games including were among the most-profitable games in Russia in 2018 accounting for over 50% of the $736 million Russian PC games market, with Fortnight placing second on the list.
  • Based on the above data, Fortnight was both among the best-selling and most played PC games in Russia in 2018.

RESEARCH STRATEGY

To provide the top five PC games in Russia based on popularity and/or sales, we began our research by scouring the public domain for any reports by market trackers such as SuperData Research, market research sites such as MarketWatch, statistics sites such as Statista, and leading gaming networking and analytics sites such as Steam. While these resources provided some useful statistics and insights on the overall Russian gaming industry, there was nothing on the top PC games in Russia, especially in 2019.
Next, our research centered on Russian gamers' social networks such GamesAwards.ru, credible Russian entertainment and gaming resources including Igrofania, Russian-oriented lifestyle/entertainment magazines such as Cadelta.ru and Life.ru, and Russian-oriented marketing analytics sites such as Russian Search Marketing. While we managed to find some information on the top-grossing free-to-play PC games in Russia and the most popular PC games in Moscow, there was no information on the top PC games specifically in Russia. Also, the available information was for 2018 yet our preference was for 2019 content.

Our third strategy was to search the entirety of the public domain using search strings in the Russian language in order to acquire any information published in Russian that does not show up in normal Google searches. We also searched through market intelligence resources for esports and games including NewZoo as well as Russia-based media resources such as Channel 5. Our strategy also entailed searching through Russian-based tech review resources such as GeeksUs as well as for any analyses by the top Russian social networks such as Vkontakte.ru and Odnoklassniki.ru. Our research produced several useful insights on the industry but nothing specific to the rankings of the top five PC games in Russia in 2018.

With no available information on the top PC games in Russia in 2019, we considered the information garnered for 2018 from our second strategy. Cadelta.ru published a report by Russia's largest telecommunications company MGTS detailing the most popular PC games played in the Moscow region in 2018 while Russia-Promo provides the "top most profitable free-to-play PC games in Russia" as of 2018 according to NewZoo. We noticed that some PC games such as Fortnight and Dota 2 appear in both reports meaning that the most popular games are also the most-profitable/best-selling. Another resource published by IronSource quotes a NewZoo study that states that multiplayer games (referred to as MMOs) are the most popular PC games among Russians. This correlates the MGTS study that found that all the games in the top-10 most played list in Moscow are multiplayer projects. We have, therefore, provided the top PC games played in Moscow as a proxy for the top games played in Russia.

Notably, we tried but could not find corresponding/original reports by NewZoo and MGTS that we hoped would have supporting quantitative data. However, we still consider the information provided to be reliable since the publishers sourced from reliable/reputable resources and not from their own opinions.

Most Popular PC Games: Poland

Unfortunately, insufficient data exists to determine the top five games in Poland. Some information relevant to the topic and an overview of your research team's attempted strategies are included below.

RELEVANT FINDINGS

  • The top five PC games based on popularity in August 2019 in Poland are the following: FIFA 20, Cyberpunk 2077, Wolfenstein Youngblood Deluxe Edition, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, and Final Fantasy XIV Shadowbringers.
  • The Polish video game market is worth around $550 million annually. The market is expected to record an annual growth rate of 6.5% between 2019 and 2023.
  • Two of the top Polish-made games in 2018 were Frostpunk and Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales.
  • In 2019, 42% of Polish gamers bought their PC games on the platform Steam.
  • The top five best-selling games in Poland on Stream in 2015 are the following: Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Garry's Mod, Euro Truck Simulator 2, and The Witcher 2: Assasins of Kings Enhanced Edition.
  • Polish PC gamers, which number around 12.3 million people, are more price-sensitive than gamers from other parts of the world.
  • At this link is a list of the top iPhone games in Poland, and at this link is a list of the top Android games in Poland.
  • At this link is a list of Europe's top video games in 2018.

RESEARCH STRATEGY

Ultimately, your research team was unable to identify the top five games in Poland based on verifiable, quantitative data. In an attempt to arrive at an answer, we employed three different strategies.
First, we searched news outlets and gaming publications for precompiled data on the best-selling or most played PC games in Poland. As Poland is a growing market for video game production and consumption, we thought that news outlets may have already published lists of the top games in Poland. We searched both in English and in Polish on sites like GRY Online, Euro Gamer, and Skapiec. The most promising result from this search is the ranking of PC games from August 2019 by Skapiec. However, while the website says that the ranking is based on popularity, it fails to explain how it measures popularity and provides no evidence or sources for its ranking.
From this initial search, we also gained information on other potentially relevant sources, and so we widened our search to industry publications like PC Games Insider, competition websites like Liquipedia, gaming networks like ESL play, and industry research websites like eMarketer. We conducted this search because these different publications are likely to have distinct audiences, including both customers and employees of video game companies. By looking through the perspective of different audiences, we hoped that our chances of finding qualitative information on the top games in Poland would increase. Unfortunately, even with these more specific sources, we were unable to find appropriate information.
Second, we identified the top PC games in Europe and attempted to triangulate a response by crosschecking these games with their performance in Poland. We assumed that the games that are popular across Europe are likely to also be popular in Poland, so starting with this list would be a strong base for a ranking of the top five games. Again we were unsuccessful in our strategy because we found it difficult to identify the number of downloads, or hours played for each game in Poland specifically. We were only able to identify regional trends, like for Eastern Europe, and not for Poland in particular.
Last, because we identified that 42% of PC games in Poland are bought on Steam, we attempted to identify the best-selling or most played games on Steam in Poland. We searched Steam's self-published data and third party analytics from Steam Spy. However, this strategy failed to result in information more recent than 2015, because Steam has changed the way that they release customer data in a way that prioritizes privacy.

Most Popular PC Games: Italy

The top five best-selling PC games in Italy as of March 2019 are Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Battlefield 1, The Sims 4, Football Manager 2019, and FIFA 19.

TOP SELLING PC GAMES

January – 2019

March–2019

From 08/07/2019 to 07/14/2019

2018

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

We commenced our research by looking for publicly available information about the top selling PC games in Italy in 2019. Initially, this portion of the search was conducted in English, however, results in English were not providing robust information. Therefore, looked for information in Italian. With this approach we were able to locate the Associazione Editori Sviluppatori Videogiochi Italiani (AESVI) or The Italian Video Game Developers Association.

This association publishes weekly and monthly lists of the best-selling games in Italy (they don’t provide the exact number publicly, only the rank). The monthly lists available were included in the report and one example (the most recent) of the weekly list was included as well. We also found the best-selling games of 2018 and included that in the report to provide the “final” list that would not be affected by temporary trends, like discounts.

Next, we turned our attention to the most played video games. We started by repeating our previous strategy and looked for publicly available lists, with both English and Italian sources. We examined several industry related sites, databases, and market reports, but we were unable to find the most played PC games in 2019 in Italy.

In the AESVI annual report, we discovered that the most popular game platforms among Italians are Steam (20%), Origin (16%), Battle net (13%), Uplay (12%), and Altri (12%). Therefore, we searched for breakdowns and information about Italian players in each platform (or marketplace) to find out how many Italians play a certain game. However, this approach didn’t provide much information, since most metrics for these marketplaces are either global or regional. We then focused on video game’s consumers and searched for surveys, social media trends, etc. hoping that these resources would shed some light into the topic. Most surveys we found, focused on habits, platforms or overall games, not PC games or provided data outside the acceptable time frame.

Most Popular PC Games: France

Due to lack of preexisting and publicly available information on the top five PC games in France for 2019, the next best available data, which is a list of top PC games in France for 2018 has been provided. The top 5 best-selling PC games in France in 2018 were The Sims 4, Farming Simulator 19, Overwatch, World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.

#5: Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 by Electronic Arts
  • Total Units Sold in 2018: 16,294

USEFUL FINDINGS:

  • According to Newzoo, as of July 2019, the top five most popular global PC games, ranked in order of number of unique PC players who play the games during a calendar month are:
#2: Minecraft
#3: Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
#4: Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege
#5: Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft
  • According to WePC, in February 2018, 29% of PC gamers in France were playing Fortnite, compared to only 8% of PC gamers playing PUBG.
  • According to VGChartz, the top five best-selling PC games of all time are:
  • The Sims 3 - 7.95 million units sold;
  • World of Warcraft — 6.33 million units sold;
  • Diablo III — 5.23 million units sold;
  • Microsoft Flight Simulator — 5.12 million units sold;
  • Starcraft II — 4.86 million units sold.
  • According to Newzoo, 37% of France's online population that plays PC games are men, while 28% are women.

RESEARCH STRATEGY

The research team began by looking for pre-compiled information through game tracker sites and statistics databases such as Newzoo, GameTracker, Red Shell, and GameRanger. We also looked into video game websites such as IGN, PCMag, and Eurogamer. We only found global information from Newzoo for the month of July 2019. We also found a 2018 Games Market Report for France, but the information is locked behind a paywall. Newzoo offered more information behind a paywall subscription, including "top games per country, playtime, month-over-month growth rate, crossover, churn, and retention."

We then searched for data points for possible triangulation from Statista as well as market intelligence research sources such as NPD Insights, VGChartz, IBISWorld, and Business Wire. We only found a report about the sales values and volume of the leading PC and console video games via Statista. Using VGChartz, we found yearly charts of their top 100 best-selling video games in France. However, the list was for all platforms, and there were only two PC games included which are The Sims 4 and Farming Simulator 19. This report was also from 2018.

Next, we conducted a press search for French articles and industry associations including the French Video Game Trade Association, or Syndicat National du Jeu Vidéo (SNJV), and Leisure Software Publishers Association (Syndicat des Editeurs de Logiciels de Loisirs (SELL)), among others. We found information about the top 20 PC games in France based on the number of units sold from a France Market Report published by SELL in 2018. There is no 2019 data or report as yet.

Therefore, due to the lack of pre-compiled reports from industry sources and French regional/local sources, we broadened our scope into 2018 and considered the next best information available from our press search — the top 20 PC games in France in 2018.

Most Popular PC Games: Norway

After thorough research, we couldn't determine the top five PC games in Norway. We have, however, provided helpful findings based on multiplatform games.

HELPFUL FINDINGS

RESEARCH STRATEGY

The research team searched for the top five PC games in Norway in Game Tracker sites such as Newzoo. Newzoo is powered by Overwolf's user base of 12 million PC game enthusiast worldwide. The site publishes most popular Core PC games based on the total unique players worldwide. However, we couldn't find a breakdown by country and users need to have an enterprise solution to access unlimited data with custom research. As we searched further, we found that World of Warcraft was the most popular core PC game in Norway with 18.8% among gamers last August 2018, which we included as a helpful finding. The research team could not find 2019 Newzoo news that features the most popular PC games in Norway. We also searched game trackers such as GameTracker, Red Shell, and Game Analytics we were unable to find per-country breakdown data.

Next, we searched for the market reports and industry in sites such as Statista, IBISWorld, and Business Wire. Statista only reported the most popular types of computers for the year 2017 and 2018, and it doesn't have 2019 data specific to PC games. Business Wire has Norway's Animation, VFX & Games Industry report, which includes PC games but doesn't mention the top PC games in the topics listed.

Lastly, we searched for articles specific to the region and its language. We also searched for industry associations within the region such the Association for the Nordic Game Industry (ANGIE) and databases such as Statistics Norway and found a 2019 top Nordic Games in terms of sales from ANGIE. There is a breakdown for the country of Norway, but it listed the top 10 multiplatform games. Also, only FIFA19 and Fortnite are the games included in the top 10 with PC support. A 2018 study shows the most popular games among children in Norway, but they are also multiplatform games, and only two are pure PC games. We included multiplatform games popular children in Norway with PC as the core platform as helpful findings. Norsk mediebarometer 2018 published by Statistics Norway only shows the percentage of those who played PC games among gamers in an average day but no breakdown of the most popular PC game titles played.

Most Popular PC Games: Denmark

World of Warcaft is the most popular PC video game in the Nordics and 18.4% of gamers in Denmark play it. Furthermore, almost all teenage boys in Denmark play PC games, with nearly half of them playing every day. However, information on the top 5 PC games in Denmark as of 2019 is not available.

HELPFUL FINDINGS

  • World of Warcraft was the most popular game played in the Nordics and 18.4% of Denmark’s gamers played this game.
  • About 96% of teenage boys in Denmark play computer games and almost 49% do so every single day.
  • About 10% of all women over the age of 50 play computer games daily in Denmark, while the same applies to only 5% of 13 to 19-year-olds.
  • The Danish gaming industry for computer and mobile games is seeing negative growth as they are lacking a strong environment for game development.
  • Felix the Reaper and A Hat in Time were some Danish computer games launched at GamesCom event in Germany.

TOP 5 MULTIPLATFORM GAMES IN DENMARK

MOST POPULAR GAMING GENRES AMONG DANISH BOYS IN 2017

RESEARCH STRATEGY

We began our research by looking through market and industry reports on sources such as Research and Markets and IBISWorldon for any information on the Denmark Computer game market with a specific focus on PC games. However, using this approach, we only found information on the Gaming market size and growth of the VFX and Games industry. Furthermore, there was no mention of top PC games in the country.

As our next approach, we looked through articles and reports from gaming analytics companies such as Newzoo, Gametracker, and Gameanalytic. However, this did not offer any additional insight into the prevalence of PC games in the Nordic region or Denmark specifically.

Therefore, we began looking into gaming associations in the region like and databases such as Scangame.dk and Gamedevmap to see if these sources have published information on the top PC games in Denmark. However, this strategy did not work as the information published was about the top 10 multiplatform games, which included PC games, but there was no information exclusively on top PC games.

As a final approach, we expanded the scope of the research to include the year 2018. We hoped to find relevant information as a starting point and then verify that data with more current information. We looked for information in press releases, reports, credible news media, and industry-specific blogs and news on sites such as Gamereactor.dk, Connery.dk, and Finans.dk. However, this strategy was not fruitful as there was no information on the top 5 PC games in Denmark in 2018. Instead, we found information on various PC games and new games releases in 2019. We were able to find information on the top multiplatform games in 2017. However, using the methods described above, we could neither verify that this information was still current, nor could we narrow the data down to include PC-only games.

Most Popular PC Games: Belgium

After an exhaustive search through publicly-available articles, databases, and reports, the top 5 PC games in Belgium for 2019 could not be determined. Some helpful findings, as well as the strategy used for this research, are available below.

Helpful Findings:

  • A survey reveals that the most played video game genre in Belgium are first-person shooter/action with 9.97% of respondents stating that they play games of that genre. This is followed by the casual genre with 8.06%.
  • World of Warcraft was the most popular core PC game in Belgium, which is played by 13.8% among Belgian PC gamers last August 2018.
  • In 2017, 29% of Steam's revenue came from sales in Western Europe, of which Belgium is a part of. This is only topped by North America which accounted for 34% of Steam's revenue.
  • The best-selling games in Belgium in 2018 are Call of Duty: WWI, FIFA 18, Grand Theft Auto V, Assassin’s Creed: Origins, and The Sims 4.
  • In 2018, the PC game ARK Survival Evolved appeared to have been popular among Belgian core PC gamers, being played by about 3.7% of the country's core PC gamers.

Research Strategy:

To determine the top 5 PC games in Belgium based on sales or number of players, we first searched news outlets and gaming publications for pre-compiled data on the best-selling or most played PC games in Belgium. As we have found that Belgium is not new to the gaming industry; in fact, it is one of the first countries to regulate the use of loot boxes in video games; we assumed that it is likely that news outlets may have already published lists of the top games in Belgium. We searched both in English and in Dutch on sites such as HLN and Euro Gamer. The most relevant result from this search is an article about best-selling video games from 2018. However, it appears that this does not give information on the number of copies sold or other similar metrics. It also does not specify whether this is for PC games or video games in general, although the games mentioned are multi-platform games. We also conducted public databases such as Statista for this information, however, we were only able to determine that first-person shooter games are the most popular video game genre in Belgium.

From this initial search, we also gained information on other potentially relevant sources, and so we widened our search to industry publications like PC Games Insider, competition websites like Liquipedia, gaming networks like ESL play, and industry research websites like Newzoo. We conducted this search because these different publications are likely to have distinct audiences, including both customers and employees of video game companies. By looking through the perspective of different audiences, we hoped that our chances of finding information on the top games in Belgium would increase. We were able to find that in 2017, 39% of PC gamers in Belgium were female, however, we were not able to find any information that is relevant to this research.

We then attempted to triangulate data for this research by identifying the top PC games in Europe and crosschecking these games with their performance in Belgium. We assumed that the games that are popular across Europe are likely to also be popular in Belgium, so starting with this list would be a strong base for a ranking of the top five games. We were able to determine the top-selling video games in Europe, however, we were unsuccessful in our strategy because we found it difficult to identify the number of downloads, or hours played for each game in Belgium specifically. We were only able to identify regional trends, like for Western Europe, and not for Belgium in particular.

Finally, we attempted to identify the best-selling or most played games on platforms such as Steam in Belgium. We searched self-published data from companies running the platforms and third-party analytic from sites such as Steam Spy. However, no relevant information was found through this strategy as it seems that platforms such as Steam have changed the way that they release customer data in a way that prioritizes privacy thus only general data could be gathered, nothing specific to Belgium.

Note: Screenshots of Statista graphs used for this research are available in an attached Google document.
