Which are some popular graphical artists online communities and how did they get popular?
Hello! Thanks for your question about online communities for graphical artists. The short version is that there are many platforms that range from social media, forums, the selling-spaces that are popular platforms for artists.. Below you will find a deep dive of my findings.
On another note, I spent some time in artist communities online, so hopefully I can guide you in the right direction!
METHODOLOGY
I searched for platforms that offered more of a community and social networking opportunity such as social media or forums. I excluded platforms that were only for selling work, and not for communicating with other artists. I searched for any platforms that were exclusive to animators.
FINDINGS
deviantART is the oldest online community for artists. The artists range from fan art and hobbiests to professional artists. Their unique community that offers both gallery space and forums, as well as a point system currency, make this a popular platform for artists all over the world.
Animated Buzz is one of the most popular animation platforms for aspiring animators. Created by Disney animator Mario Furmanczyk, Animated Buzz features gallery space, forums, and tutorials. This website focuses on animation, which makes it a popular platform for artists.
Dribble is known as a "show and tell" for designers. Artists may post screenshots of their process, work, and more to a community of artists. This website functions a bit like Instagram, except specifically for artists. Dribble is unique because you can search for artists for hire, art teams for hire, and artist communities worldwide. Members may also host a meetup to meet other community members in real life. Dribble's ability to host meetups with other artists is what helps make it a popular community.
The Animation World Network has a vast forum dedicated to many aspects of animation including questions, sharing, and selling. The website itself offers many articles, but the community for artists is mainly inside the forum. This group is the largest animation publishing group on the internet. Because of this, AWN is one of the most popular spaces for animators online.
ConceptArt.org is a traditional forum community for artists. It offers workshops called Level Up, general artist forums, forums specifically for animators, and art sharing forums. It currently has 445,546 members. With the amount of members it has, this forum is extremely active. What is most unique is their Level Up workshop, which allows for artists to share techniques with one another, making it popular among those who are looking to learn.
A Singular Creation Art Community is also a traditional forum community for artists. With 23,174 members, it is an active forum. This forum offers contests, artist spotlights, resources, and general artist talk. If an artist is looking for easy to find contests, this forum should be popular for them.
Facebook, though already a popular social media platform online, is also used by artist communities to meet each other, feature their art, and share resources. Artists may belong to "groups" with other artists world wide, share their artwork, or create their own artist page. The ability to create your own artist group creates limitless possibilities for online connections, which makes Facebook especially popular for artists.
Instagram, another popular social media platform, is also used by artists to share and promote their artwork as well as connect and follow other artists online. Instagram offers a primarily picture relationship without much opportunity for lengthy conversations. If artists want strictly art with not much conversation, this platform will be popular for them.
CONCLUSION
To wrap it up, there are many popular platforms that range from social media, forums, and the selling-spaces for artists. Each popular website has its own community and appeal that draws in its users based on its unique features and the audience it is targeting.
